LOC Gain and Amp Gain pretty high, but still low output - 2 questions

These subs were my birthday present and I'd like to get the settings all good so I can stop messing with it.

Setup (all that I know. I bought the amp and subs used.)

LOC - My LOC is a metra adjustable LOC. It goes from 0V to 1.2V

Amp - Sony Xplod 600w. It's an older model maybe.

Subs - 2 sony xplod 1300w max subs.

Box type - Sealed.

2 QUESTIONS:

1)How does the gain work on the two dials on the LOC? As I turn those left the volume increases I think. And on the amp why does the dial at the low end start at 6V and as I turn it to the right the volts get smaller and I hear more volume?

2)The gain on the LOC I have set on about 0.9V (out of 1.2). The gain dial thing on the amplifier goes from 5 or 6 volts on the lowest end (idk, that's the end of the dial with the lowest output), and it goes down to 0.3v (but up in volume) as you turn the dial up.

The only settings it has are LPF (I listen to rock. It's set at about 100 and I like the sound of it.), gain (6V low to 0.3V high), and bass boost (0-10dB).

My question is this. The gain on the amplifier is at 0.5v and the LOC is at 0.9v. I have bass boost at + or - 4.5 dB. I heard that bass boost is bad and I can't tell if it is clipping. Would it be ok to lower the bass boost to 3 dB, and up the LOC gain to 1.2V (max) and the amp's gain a little lower (I don't know why it gets louder as the volt markings go down. I mean turn it towards the right)?

What would you suggest I set these things to? Or is my tentative settings ok?

6 volts would be quietest and lower volts would be louder.

The reason, let's say you set that dial at 6 volts, then change it to 1 volt. The amp will have the same output at 1 volt when it receives 1 volt of signal as it would when you had it set at 6 volts with 6 volts of signal. That's why turning it to the right makes it louder.

It sounds like the way you're saying should work, but setting your gains with a DMM should work best.
