little wiring question

so what I want to know is how to plug an amp to a car battery but not in a car. Lets say I have, on a table, a car battery and an amplifier. how do I plug it?

1)

battery + to amp's + and - to amp's -

or

2)

battery + to amp's + and battery - to a ground and amp's - to another gound

if that's a bit unclear, plz tell me and i'll try to explain

"Ground" in a car all runs through the frame to - terminal on the battery. SO assuming you're trying to do this on a boat, a bench, or out in the yard, use the - terminal on the battery for the - from the amp's power terminals.
