I have a 97 eclipse, and I'm trying to install just a 10 inch sub for some decent bass. Anyway, I am going to keep the factory head unit, so I needed a line out converter.

At the place where I bought it, the guy told me to hook it up in series with the rear speakers for a signal. When I did that the rear speakers didn't work anymore. Should I be hooking it up in parallel?

you want to do it in parallel. He must have had a brain cramp.

The impedance of LOC inputs is very, very high. Series would basically cause the HU to see an infinite resistance and almost all of it's voltage that should be driving the speaker would be dropped in the resistance of the LOC.

In parallel the LOC is almost invisible to the HU, a very small % of it's power goes to the LOC, the rest to the speaker.
