Ok, I admit I'm an old head.

I got into car audio when I was 16 and installed a huge booming system in my SUV. Had a ton of fun and forgot all about it when I went away to college. Fast forward 15 years.

I have a Lexus GS300 and want beef up low frequency response. I have a good deal of knowledge about installations and cars in general but equipment has passed me by. Ideally I think I would like 12" in a 4th order bandpass box vented through the rear deck. I have the woodworking skills but need advise on component selection and corresponding box design.

As much as I would love to spend tons of time on this I just can't. I know you guys are up on current equipment so I turn to you and your expertise. I haven't formaly set a budget but I imagine

Help me reignite my passion for car audio.

Your idea for a single 12 in a 4th ported through the rear deck is a good one. I have a Lexus and I ported mine through the armrest, but I think you have a stock sub in the rear deck and that would be a great place to port.

If you've been away from the scene for 15 years, you will be flat out amazed with the power and output of today's equipment. It's no longer Punch 45's and sealed boxes. Lol. For $1k, you can get some serious low end.

Sundown SA12's work well in 4th orders. The Digital Designs 2512 is one of the best subs on the market for 4th's but DD is a little overpriced, IMO. A rule of thumb is a sub that works well in a sealed box will work well in a 4th. And I say that because 90% of subs these days are built for vented enclosures.

You didn't say anything about how much trunk you were willing to give up so I'll just assume you realize that a 4th order for a 12 will be pretty big. As in, you may need to put your golf bag on the rear seats after this. Lol.

I say get a Sundown SA12 and a Sundown 1,000w amp and build this box...

.75 cubic feet sealed side.

2.25 cf ported side tuned to 47hz with a single 6" aero port firing through your stock subwoofer location.

Do that and you may need to upgrade your highs to keep up. Lol.

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming. After I made the original post I got a little worried that I worded it wrong. I'm not looking for anyone to do all of the research for me just point me in some reasonable directions.

I want to use a 4th order set-up for a couple of reasons, the greatest of which is rattles. And porting the box through the rear parcel shelf should take care of most of them. I also like the efficiency and the challenge of it all.

I'm happy to hear the hobby has come so far since I've been gone. I went to IASCA in the mid-90's at which time car audio was still very very expensive. I'm not sure how far I'll go this time but I'm excited to dip my toe in the water, slowly.
