Legs for a box...Louder/Cleaner?

I was looking around at box designs today and i thought to myself, Home theater Systems use legs for most of their boxes so they don't sit on the ground and i guess the bass eminates through the air more. I was just wondering if doing this for a car enclosure would make more bass and less rattles because the box wouldnt be vibrating the floor of the car as much. Any thoughts?

I doubt it. I think the reason that HT subs have legs is because they are ported with the ports firing downward. If they weren't elevated, the port would be going straight into the floor. I'm not certain on this, but it makes sense.

i know some ht boxes use these

yeah thats exactly what im talkin about, im thinking if something like that were used in a car it could reduce the some of the unwanted vibrations to the floor and the trunk and more of that sound would be heard instead of absorbed as rattles, but honestly i could be way off base here.

wouldn't legs allow the box to tip and rock as well in a car?

i thought about tipping too, but i think if the sub were heavy and top mounted in the direct center and the box was not very tall i dont think it would be an issue.

haha plumbing straps? or maybe if a box were built and the sides had about an inch of overhang on the bottom and that overhang could serve as the legs? It would probably be a lot more stable...but i really wanna know what kind of difference in sound this would make for a car. Tighter? more boomy? loss or gain of SQ? or maybe even no difference?

well plumbing straps would be ideal for security as well, as it would be bolted to the car so it can't get jacked as easily.

My box has legs......its in a truck and downfiring though.

i think most of our sub boxes are too heavy to worry about any of this, but i could be wrong

plus, most trunks dont really have a "floor" so its somewhat different than in a house setup

The point of using speaker spikes is to basically "ground" the box with your home. Any coloration caused by box vibration can usually be lessened by coupling it to the floor. In a car, it would be absolutely worthless as your trunk will be jostled around by simple road noise and uneven pavement.
