i want to hook my dvd player up to the arcam reciever so that i can play the sound through that instead of the shitty tv speakers. but everytime i do i get annoying buzz feedback thats audible the whole time. how do i fix it?

Don't use a cheater plug... Never use a cheater plug for anything other than diagnosing a problem. Never use them for a long period of time. Damage to your system or injury to yourself of someone else could occur. There is a reason ground plugs are used.

That being said, make sure that your receiver and the DVD player are plugged into the same power source. Make sure that you have a solid ground. Make sure that your RCA (analog I assume) are firmly seated into the plugs. Try using different outlets to see if you have a bad ground or stray voltage on the neutrals.

If this doesn't fix the problem, attempt to 'lift' the ground by using a cheater plug.

This is a cheater plug.

But only use this to test, because lifting the ground can be hazardous...

If the hum goes away then you need to get an isolator. Even if it doesn't an Isolator might help the problem.

You want to look for something like this.

radioshaft and PE will have a ground loop isolator, the cheap and easy way to fix the problem is to pull the ground terminal off of the power strip or cord.
That is a VERY bad idea... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

i had a weird thing happen to me...i had the DVD player on the other day and there was feedback coming through the surround speakers. I had the audio cables out from dvd to inputs on receiver with the video cables going to input on the tv coming directly from dvd player.. I turned off the surround and plugged audio rca's directly into the tv and the hum played through the tv. I switched rca's = same problem. I started to unplug the rca's and when i unplugged the red, the hum quit and sound was still coming from left and right even tho tv is in stereo mode. plugged red back in=hum...unplugged white and hum goes away and still stereo sound.

any ideas?

Back in the good ole days. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
If by good ole days you mean really crappy built tube amplifiers, low fidelity speakers, crappy turn tables, and lots and lots of hum & heat. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Why aren't you running digital?

Just curious.

But, let me get this right.

When you unplug the "right" from the TV you don't have hum but sound comes from both channels? Sounds like there is something screwey in the DVD player...

Somehow I believe that Jim would argue a few of those points...

There were a few really legendary products back in the day.

But, most sucked... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

They were designed to use the least number of Tubes possible with cheap components and sometimes components out of their voltage ratings.
