Kicker subwoofers

I'm using what's considered quality speakers, CDT audio 6.7 inch midwoofers.

Funny part is the drivers side speaker has taken the power since the start, and the passenger side is the only one to blow speakers so it could just be I got manufacturer defects.. gains were checked with a SMD-DD1 and they were proper. Anyways, different situation. Good to hear the hertz esk 65xl are worth the price lol

Where the gains set at -5db or -15db? -15 is heavy clipping in most newer songs.

I'm not sure, I wasn't the one using the DD-1 because I don't own it. At the request of the person I purchased the speakers from I wanted to ensure that my gains were set right (initially I did it by ear) to rule out whether or not I was setting the gain improperly. Ended up having to pay someone to set my gains (they were set right anyway). Only benefit from it was now i know where my headunit clips...

Pretty sure the DD-1 only does one distortion setting? like I said though, I've never used one

It has different tracks to use which set different levels.

I can ask him, i havent put a new speaker in on that side since the gains were set again though. need to get a new one, and see if it still has issues.

I'm just weary about whether or not the speaker came as a defect (first speaker was pristine from factory, the second warranty speaker was repaired/refurbed somehow).

edit; not sure if it matters but he set the gains with the CD and i use bluetooth, would this matter?

I still believe that 300w RMS for a single 6.5 inch midrange speaker is too much for it to handle. i thought that the manufacturer power ratings were dynamic
When I see it I'll believe it lol

I have 500 wrms going to each door with only one mid and one midrange tweeter...

What amp? And it could be that the song is clipped to hell. I'm running 150ish watts to the CDT speakers in my signature. Could go more, but my amp struggles to output enough voltage on music to reach 150 as is.

the amp is a polk audio PAD40004, its been shown to put out 200w @ 2ohm (rated) when tested.

is it really this uncommon? everything else has been ruled out besides a bad amp or speaker (I think, gains were set with a DD-1).

If the person using the DD-1 don't understand how it works it's a bad tool. But with one blowing it sounds like a defect or bad install on the driver. Also if the mid is playing out of its useable bandwidth it can blow. That's the key part to running overrated, keep the bandwidth as minimal as needed.

there will always be haters, everyone thinks they are the top dog. I run kicker currently, some ppl talk so much **** about kicker and its like just stfu you do you and I do me. I don't care about DD, or JL, or SQ etc I can easily say those are garbage but I don't. I was never a **** talker, though no one can stand those ppl there are a lot of those types of ppl on forums. the funny thing is, ive had my kicker for over 2 years already and have had zero problems with them and im giving them a couple hundred over the rated rms. guys be like, 'I run DD its better than your pos kicker' and I be like 'that's cool cuz I don't even like DD and would never touch a DD sub' lol but that's just me, to each their own. I love their name though

Kicker has it's place IMO. I have 2 of the CVT shallows and they're probably the loudest shallows I've heard and they take 1000w RMS without complaining.
No, they're not high quality, high power, high excursion speakers. But if you tune them properly in the correct box you can get pretty loud. Some guy on youtube was hitting 150db with 2 kicker comps and 500w or so, but that was probably with an ideal box, ideal car, and lots of testing.

There's a reason why I'm trying to get a larger box with some quality brand speakers that have more excursion though

Maybe 500 to the pair.. even that is pushing it. Also, music is dynamic.
