Kicker Amp and Sub Install Questions

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and want to add a sub in the trunk. The car has a cut-out in rear deck for an 8" open air sub from the factory. But I actually want a bigger sound. Due to budget constraints, I ordered a Kicker 12" L3 and a Kicker ZX300.1. I have a friend who does stereo system installs and builds enclosures. I've seen and heard his system and it sounds great and with his custom fiberglass/mdf enclosures it looks professional.

I've always either ran stock systems or when I was much younger, had a system installed for me. I've been reading the forums trying to educate myself as much as possible so I won't appear to be a ******* when I'm discussing and "helping" him do the install and make the enclosure. I know I want it ported. The specs on the sub are as follows:

SIZE [in, cm]: 12, 30

IMPEDANCE [Ohms]: 2 or 4 DVC

POWER WATTS [peak/RMS]: 800/400

SENSITIVITY [dB 1w/1m]: 86.3

MOUNTING DEPTH [in, cm]: 6-1/4, 15.8

MOUNTING DIAMETER [in, cm]: 11-1/16, 28.1

MIN SEALED BOX VOL [cu. ft, L]: 1.25, 35.4

MAX SEALED BOX VOL [cu. ft, L]: 4.6, 130

MIN VENTED BOX VOL [cu. ft, L]: 1.75, 49.6

MAX VENTED BOX VOL [cu. ft, L]: 2.25, 63.7

and the amp:

Amplifier Class AB

Number of Channels 1 - Mono

Total Peak Power Output 900 watts

Total RMS Power Output 300 watts

Maximum Input Gauge Size 8 AWG

Minimum Impedance Unbridged 2 ohms

THD at Rated RMS Power 1%

Speaker Level Inputs Yes

Preamp Outputs No

Built-in Crossover Low-pass (LP)

Low-Pass Crossover Frequency Fixed at 80 Hz

Subsonic Filter 0 - 25 Hz

Signal-to-Noise Ratio 96 dB

Bass Boost 0 - 12 dB

Bass/Gain Remote Yes

I would say a ported enclosure firing toward the trunk would be optimal for sql.

Lotta greek there. My questions:

-First, will this setup be adequate for no-earth shaking bass, but a nice sound.

-For SQL what should be the cu. ft. of the ported enclosure?

-Which tunes the sub for best sql, size of port or size of enclosure?

-Enclosure material: I'm going to use MDF, so 3/4"? carpet for covering? Or is covering just cosmetic?

- Should I remove plastic cap from the empty sub on the rear deck for sound to enter cab of car?

Any other basic information you feel like tossing out here so I can at least understand what he's talking about will be greatly appreciated.
