KHA does an SPL build - 1996 Astro Van

Bummer, didn't see the van so figured you weren't there. Gay purple minivan was mine.

LONG *** ride home, rained hard the first hundred miles, but cleared up for the last 100....

lmao - I'd rock your "gay purple minivan" any day of the week //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

put a double din Kenwood in the van this weekend. it didn't fit, so custom mounts and some mods to the dash panel were required. i'd like to touch up the finished product but it was close enough for the evening.

next up - relocating amps... look at all this space

pics from the truck box. built the box in under 6 hours over two days.

amp location was temporary, about an hour of effort. i built a box for the caps.

the end results will be amps on top of the box with a cover to flush them up with caps under the box. a small seat will be added behind the driver's seat.

the box and cover will either be carpeted or painted blue to match the truck.

more progress late last night (10pm-5am)

got the amps moved, mounting boards cut and painted, wires ran. the factory panels will fit over these and completely hide the gear. as stealth as it gets.

the rockford 500x shown will be replaced with a Massive NX4. A total of 8 full range channels are available. Will likely run the front active with a 3-way (add a mid) then have speakers in the rear doors for outdoor parties and then a sound bar above the box for higher output. i'll have relays to switch configurations.

phone pics at 5 am will be replaced with better pics. i will also likely use split loom on all wiring once we finalize.

rear battery is fused. connections are made between the rear and front battery fuses. a total of 3 fuse blocks are used. (1) ANL for the Massive N4. (2) MAXI are dedicated to the Ultracap bank that will be installed on the available space shown below. and another (2) MAXI for the 4 channel amps.

fuses will be accessible through removable rear cup holders and access. this is the Rocford that the NX4 will replace (location is sized for it)

i'll put some blue carpet in the middle pocket to hide the battery. some black fabric is there now to just reduce the visibility. turns out, i didn't need to cut out the pockets. i could have left them in place. i'll find a replacement panel in a salvage yard eventually. i did have to cut the middle pocket to clear the battery. carpet in the pocket will reduce rattles of anything in there anyway.

once the box is moved behind the driver's seat and the rear bench is in place, the amps are basically inaccessible, but fuses are always accessible.

i will have to change this from an SPL build to an SQ build.

we just ordered a pair of miniDSP's for 8 channels of processing. we will run 3-way active front.

i think the next show will be SQL and not SPL.

Did you try the enclosure in horn formation?
nah, nice concept but not going to achieve the final goal.

we are moving the sub to behind the driver and then putting in framing for a removable wall to seal off behind the b-pillars. we will also get the rear bench seat back in for a total of 3 captain chairs and a bench.

with the miniDSP's i think i can pull it off.

what we ordered tonight;

(2) 2in-4out miniDSP kits with the DC power isolator and USB cables/mounts.

(2) Vifa NE65W-04 2" midrange drivers. these will go in the factory tweeter locations (3" grill).

(1) DRemote for the Massive N4 - a remote amp gain knob

(1) remote for the Kenwood DDX-418 HU.

speaker wire, tie-downs, etc. as needed.

essentially, the van has 8 channels of amplification for speakers. we will use all 8 along with the mini-DSP's to do a 3-way active front stage and separately filtered rear. for $200 for both kits, it made much more sense than looking for an active crossover. Besides, the HU doesn't have time alignment and the van needs it.

should be fun.
