JL 500/1 issue

Long story short, I bought a JL 500/1 used from the intarwebz. Hooked it up (on my temporary subs), and away I went. Sounded good, got fairly loud for Lightning Audio speakers (LMAO). Like I said, I was using the subs temporarily. Anyways, I'm in traffic listening to some music, and the subs shut off. I figure cause it's a hot day, the amp went into thermal protect. I shut my radio off so both amps can cool down a bit. So I get home a few minutes later, turn the radio back on, and it's not in protect. I thought maybe there was a loose wire, so I bang on different areas of the box, and sometimes I would get like a half second burp from the subs. I get new subs, and check all my wiring, and nothing was wrong. Still not getting sound. Hook up different RCA's, and no sound. FAWK. I pull the amp apart, and don't see anything visibly wrong, and the circuit board doesn't smell burned.... it actually kinda smells like old toyota seats lmao. Also, I found (By accident) that if I'm holding the ends of the sub wires coming from the amp and ground myself on the car, I can feel the signal and the bass line and everything. It's fucking crazy.

Is my amp toast?

Is it a JL Audio Slash v2 500/1v2 500 watts RMS x 1? How "used" was it? What's the ohm rating on the subs you were running? Wired in parallel?

I previously owned a JL Audio Slash v2 500/1v2 500 driving a pair of Polk Audio MM2104 10" subs wired in parallel (showing 2 ohms to amp) and the darn thing never even got warm...class D afterall. I loved that amp!

Being that the subs are brand new, I would assume that one out of the four voice coils would be good. I can't find my DMM right now. Anyways, the subs that were on it were Lightning Audio 12's, 8ohm svc. They were wired in parallel for a 4 ohm final load. I dunno how "used" the amp was. It's not in terrible shape, cosmetically, but it does have some wear.

The v2 is black, and the 1v2 is silver with black heatsink right? Well then it's a 1v2.

The amp doesn't get too hot really.

UPDATE: Found out why I have ground noise... one of the rear channels on my amp is fucked. JL is fucked in my opinion. Also, I somehow managed to blow one of my RCA channels on my Pioneer 680MP... so now I have an amp with three working channels, a headunit with three working channels, six speakers looking for power... and also, Memphis fucked up when they built one of my brand new M1's by reversing the terminals on one of the voice coils, so I gotta pull that sub out of the box AGAIN to fix it.

FML. I need a HU and two amps.

That sux! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I've had bad luck with Memphis Car Audio amplifiers and refuse to use them, but their subs aren't that bad. As for JL Audio, I have only used their subwoofers and I never gave their amplifiers a second thought.

Must be a fake JL amp. JL is the best in the world. Their amp failure rate is 0% so it cant be a real JL amp.
So are you going to recommend that he replace it with a new Soundstream? Speaking of Soundstream... my left gain is stuck in .2 to 2volt input voltage and my right gain is following the switch at .5 to 5volt. Looks like I get to pull the amp and do a perma mod to keep it in .5 to 5v input level range.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

So you tried different cables? Sounds like a dead channel in the rca cable.
Yeah I tried different cables. I can't troubleshoot anything in the system past what I've already done until I get a new headunit and amps.

I should go back to Alpine amps... they never gave me any problems.

Car audio is so much fun, ain't it? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I have never had an issue with JL Audio...I think they have some really good products out there. Like I said, I loved my JL Audio 500X1, sad it wouldn't fit in my new truck. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Yeah, I have 2 Alpine PDX amps now...only ones I could find that would fit in my center console! Anyways, they are Class D but seem to get pretty toasty...I ended up installed a couple of cooling fans, one pushing, one pulling...that has helped a lot.

you can get a better amp for the money.
No shit? Wow. I woulda never thought of that. Why don't you go outside and play while the big boys talk, mmkay?

Anyways, the HU is going in the trash as soon as I get a new one, being that one of the sub channels doesn't work either. Epic failure.

LMAO....

OP, how did you set the gains?? Also did you completely grind/clean the ground?
