Is turning gain all the way up necessarily a bad thing?

l4yfr4me-A DVOM or DMM will help you set the amp but it's not the final word in your setup. There are other ways to set the gain properly but the equipment is a little expensive. Check all of the basics out to be sure you have it connected properly. Make sure you don't have the power cable ziptied to the RCA going to the amp, that could be a cause of the distortion you are hearing.
I know this. Power and RCAs don't come close to even touching, at all. RCAs run down the passenger side of the vehicle, Power runs down the driver's side.

Honestly if it sounds better maxed run it maxed. It's what you like.
If a speaker fails, as least we gave you a heads up that it's highly possible.
It's not like I'm going to drive around with the volume to the max all the time. My car's currently loud enough to make my ears hurt and knock shit off the walls in my house, so I don't want to damage my hearing that fast.

This.^^^

If it sounds the best that way and nothing fails then great. If it fails then it's time for an upgrade, either way it's a plus.

I'm not reading this thread.

It really depends what you are doing.. If it's a daily enjoyment system you aren't trying to get the max performance out of your amps..

If you are just setting the amps for your daily you can just use common sense..

Just figure out the Headunit voltage and the voltage range on the amp's gain and set it by that and ear..

**** this just seems like common sense to me.. It aggravates me when people ask questions like this..

Haven't you ever had to set the volume on a TV and Cable box? do you max out both volumes? no? why? cause it distorts and gets noisey and sounds liek shit... Same idea..
