Hey guys I have a pair of 12 inch L7's in ported box and i have really cheap amp pushing them and i have the gain all the way up and the bass boost about half way.

Is it bad to have the gain all the way up even though it only pushes like 250 watts rms per channel ???//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif

Maybe... As RRver said, it might be when it starts clipping, although all clipping does is put out more than the amps rated power, and you are so far under that anyway, i don't see where it's gonna hurt it.
True. If the clipped power is not enough to damage (thermally) the driver, then you should not run into problems, or so I have read.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thank you that's what i thought .//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/peace.gif.2db28b618ed8d1964ebbe2f5021d2c39.gif

When i get a bigger amp that matches my subs needs. How high should i set the gain and bass boost ?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif

Gain should be set via the gain setting tutorial. The bass boost shoudl be kept minimal, if any at all.

Bass boost is used to compensate for poor enclosure design or tiny *** boxes. I find that it basically makes bass notes long drawn out and sloppy.

So x2 on that, Bass Boust FTL //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Depending on how badly the amp is clipping, you don't need to be feeding the sub more than its rated power to cook it. Power handling is figured assuming that the sub is being fed AC only and is moving accordingly. With a fully clipped signal, the sub is getting DC (bad) and isn't moving normally (worse). The result is that a small amount of power can quickly surpass the thermal limits of the sub.

Pos rep for that! Very true. I've blown a sub with a 9v battery before, DC is bad news!

95Honda on SIN performed an experiment, and could not prove within the scope of his test that a clipped signal cause the driver to fail any sooner than a sinewave of equivalent actual power.

If I were in a slightly less lazy mood, I'd search for the link.

Even with a fully clipped signal, the speaker is still moving back and forth X number of times. That is still a substantial amount cooling going on.
