The way I see it with a comment like that, you have two choices:

1. STFU

2. Listen to more equipment

Because if you really think JL takes the cake, you're still a noob to car audio

That's the problem, though. They basically got to where they are by clever marketing. Smart on the business end, but you end up screwed as the consumer into thinking there's no better alternatives.

The only plus to JL IMO is when you find someone selling it used on CL really cheap. Since everyone and their brother buys it, there's a decent supply of used products.. But even then people usually want too much for it

You have a point there. I was feeling like hugging HAT's nuts until I started talking to people that actually owned them. If I can find a good deal on some used Clarus I might still give them a shot, though.

Id say Kicker is the biggest name out there... I've owned and heard several Kicker products and can say the SQ is pretty awful, though they get decently loud.

Some of Rockford's upper end offerings aren't bad and their amplifiers can chug out some clean power, but it's the same story as JL. Price point is still too high for what they have.

I'm pretty fond of the old school punch amps. The "original" underrated amp you could say

But I agree on their new stuff, prices are rather high

If there are any implications of "SQ", just get ready to shell out money. Maybe not per individual basis, but MSRP on any SQ gear is going to be substantial.
