is having a box too big bad for the sub?

i built a box thats made for a 12 inch sub it's 1.83 cubic feet. i dont have the sub for now but i really wanna see how the box sounds to see if i should change anything like tune it lower or higher. would putting my ten inch sub i have now be a problem for it? the sub i have now wants a 1.25 cubic foot enclosure so after displacement it'd be like .4 cubic feet too big. i'm also trying to sell the sub so i don't want to blow it before i can. will playing it for just a little in the too big of a box be a bad thing?

There is a spot where a box can be to big but your not close to it

the bigger the box the less cone control, but you are in the realm of acceptability

You could always just stick some foam blocks in there to take up a bit more space temporarily.

If the box is oversized for the sub, the sub will have a less-firm "cushion" of air behind it, meaning it can OVEREXCURRRT more easily than if it were in its "ideal" box. If you give it less power you should be alright, just watch for unnatural/unhealthy excursion.
