Installed first system, now I have a question

I've been installing head units since the late 90's, and the other day I installed my first system on my own. First I put in the head unit. A month later, I got a good deal on an amp and two 12's, so I ordered a amp wiring kit. Put all the wires (4g power to battery, 4g black to ground, amp blue to blue and white on back of head unit) without any problems.

Then it came time for the two RCA wires that go into the back of the amp. I looked on the back of my head unit, and there is only one subwoofer wire. I expected two, so I could put the RCA's in there. Is this normal? I wasn't sure which to do, so I put them in Rear Left and Rear Right. Is this what I should have done?

So it works, but I am still bothered a bit because I'm not sure if I did it right. My head unit had subwoofer controls. Turning the dial all the way up or all the way down does nothing, presumably since the lone subwoofer wire remains unconnected. Any advice besides "If it works, leave it alone?" It may work, but sub controls don't, and I have no idea if this was the best way to do it. Anyway, here's a pic of the back of my unit:

That's one of those cheap dd nav units I see. Buy a y-splitter...1 male into 2 females then connect the sub amp rca's to it.

Like this but any brand...It was the first to come up on search..

Just use a Y-splitter (1 male to 2 fem) plugged into your subwoofer rca out so you can run both rca channels to your amp. Some amps this won't be necessary though & you can just run the one rca channel to your amp. If thats the case your amp will either have a switch near the rca's that says something like (L+R---- L/mono) or it'll be mentioned in the amps user manual. The Y splitter method will definitely work though.

Ok thanks guys, I originally thought that somehow I would lose sound quality by splitting it with a Y-splitter (I'm still somewhat new at this). I think I have one in my closet, gonna look for it now!
