I'm Christian, raised Methodist and am comfortable talking about all of this.
Many Philosophers have said that religion was created by man as a necessity to make them comfortable with their existence. That we need to believe something lies beyond death and that our lives serve a greater purpose. Some also believe that religion was designed as a form of control to raise money, fight wars, whatever that was commanded by religious leaders through the act of fear.
Whether or not my god is the correct or incorrect one, the important thing is that one should live their lives based off the underlying tenets or principles of the faith that they believe in. Because when you really sink down into all religions, they're all the same. The stories, traditions, methods or worshiping may be different but the values are all the same.
My fiancé is Hindu, Mother was Catholic, best friends are Muslim, and have many other Jewish friends. I've participated in events of all of these religions and at the end of the day it really makes no difference who is right and who is wrong. It's not what you believe in it is what you do that defines you (I've heard something like this in a movie, but I really value this statement).
Why did you turn the rest of the thread about race, when you wanted to talk about religion?
