I'm inFInitely Baffled.

computerman,
so how do i measure the volume of my trunk //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

i realize this is all possible on paper - but real life performance does not always reflect mathmatical calculations in the subwoofer world //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

i am not saying you are wrong, because this is not the case, im just saying ... well... i dont know what im saying //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i just try to stay away from those kinds of calculations //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
You can measure it by rough dimensions but I really doubt your trunk is completely sealed and that it is completely rigid.

That is how it works on paper and it works the same way in real life but with many more variables that are nearly impossible to plan ahead for (like flexing of panels, parameter shifting due to heat, pushing excursion beyond xmax, part variances, temperature, air leaks ect...). If you don't account for everything, then yes, the numbers will be very different but the same rules apply to this. And like I said, it really doesn't matter if it's close enough as the slight difference is not going to be audible. You shouldn't ignore the math because it's too simplified because it can really give you an idea of what is going to happen and what to shoot for. Sure things aren't going to be idea but that's OK. That doesn't mean you should act like the math is irrelevant.

I was just giving a mathematical break down of what is actually happening in a true IB environment (and I'm not in any way saying what you guys have isn't good enough for IB and I think your work looks awesome and I'm sure it sounds that way as well). I would actually love to try an infinite baffle sometime for a home setup utilizing AE's IB15s but I kind of need a house first haha.

well. in short - hell yes.

in long, you will have to find a way to isolate the rear end of the speaker from the elements. your best bet would be to get a wide W-like gasket, if you have seen any other blowthrough projects you will know what i am talking about, you put this between the wall of the cab and the wall of the bed to stop moisture ect from getting down between the bed and the cab onto the work area.

then you will have to build some kind of seal behind the speaker - id assume you could make a sort of sealed enclosure like a normal blowthrough and then put a nice thick layer of goretex over a 'port' on the back side of the box so that it is open to the environment - but closed to the elements. the only thing i would worry about is humidity.

the only practical way of doing said project would be having a taneau (sp?) cover over the bed i think.

I might just have to do that. I guess I could coat the tube with spray-on bedliner and have it slope down so that water doesn't collect in it in case of sudden rain. Just get a cheap tonneau and cover it up when I need to.

maybe you can get a woofer suited for IB that has a cone, surround, & dustcap that is safe from the elements and invert it.\

edit: I wonder how mine will sound inverted....

bla bla bla bla. lol.
i hear ya - numbers are definatly important when choosing a driver to go into what installation you have and you should at least try and plan it on paper before putting money on the table. i honestly just try and aim for as much space as possible. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

but why you would worry about what would be considered (99%) real IB when you only have a certain area to contain it in? say you only have like 10~15 cubes and there arent any drivers sans small diamater ones that would work in that airspace? i would be more worried about what i actually have to work with as far as money to put into the system and the vehicle i own and plot that info out - know what i mean?

sorry i cut your quote out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

only way i see that working is if its a rubber surround and eaither a metal or paper treated cone. i would swing toward metal cone just to be safe. makes me think of SS RLP or RLI. i would still treat the cone of the RLI with some sort of anti moisture spray though...

and the idmax will prolly sound the same //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Myabe a couple marine woofers? Know any that are more SQ-based. I'm assuming the Memphis marines are based on the M-Class which is pretty decent SQ-wise. Any other ideas?

Since in a IB setup the trunk is basically the enclosure, what happens when you open the trunk?? Is there still bass or is it like having the subs free air?

I agree 100%

It works just the same way it did when the trunk was closed. The idea of infinite baffle is that the sub is playing free-air; you're just making sure the back wave isn't able to cancel with the front wave, ie: having a baffle board of infinite diameter.

I believe I am set on what I want to do with my trunk. something simple. it should plain and effective. I also plan to put my spare tire back into the trunk.

-false wall w/ oval window to see the iDmax's booty and the yellow top will be hidden behind the wall, out of sight, unlike right now.

-false floor w/ image dynamics logo cutout w/ plexi and ID logo on plexi showing amps behind it. Or not plexi and just leave the cutout. not sure. It should be able to raise w/ the help of hinges (between false wall and amps). I'll have to remove the false floor covers before taking out my spare though, if I have to.

Trunkssssssssssss.jpg

What do you guys think?

Won't the false wall act like a really crappy ported box, since the air has room to bounce around with only a small hole to escape into the trunk? Other than that possible problem, I like it

yea man, that beauty panel wall thing should cause an effect on the speaker, im not sure if it would be strong or weak, or whatever. but with that small of an opening it would be something.

maybe you could make the hole bigger... just enough to cover the battery up. know what i mean?

hmmmm maybe i'll change the oval window into a rectangle and have it reach all the way to the baffle. Something like a display box. Or would it be okay that I make the oval much bigger? It should be approx 19" wide x 11" high.

....now I'm thinking I should lose that false wall all together... that would take more to make it look nice though.

That's what I am doing in the ib install I'm working on now. Which also happens to be in a camry. My plan is to build an open ended enclosure around the basket of the sub , just to dress it up. Then a gigantic oval cutout the same size as this

s4010058bu2.jpg

to mimic the cutout around that big bastage that will be mounted in the false floor. Then make an inset trim panel to cover the cutout with grill cloth to match the trunk carpet or as close to it as we can get. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You could always make a beauty panel to bolt directly to the baffle, then build a separate battery box. Or maybe hide the battery in the false floor compartment? Could replace the yellowtop with something thinner like an NSB90 (I believe those are dry cell)
