a) The BLS has some statistics that the hourly worker at wal-mart makes about the same as the hourly worker in a mom-and-pop store...which isn't much.really? how many small businesses go under once a wal-mart goes in? does the average wal-mart worker makes more than the small business worker that is now no longer in business?..what about the local tax breaks that wal-mart gets to move into areas? who pays for that? there are cases of wal-marts that move into towns then move out just as soon as their tax breaks end. infact there are cases where cities and townships fight pretty hard to keep wal-marts out
b) Why can't those small businesses be competitive? Wal-Mart once had to compete against Sears, Woolworths, Montgomery-Wards, and a variety of large department stores. Wal-Mart had to compete, why can't they?
c) The lowest paid make about the same. The owners/managers of the mom-and-pop experience the greatest reduction in wage. Not the 16 year olds.
d) Not all Wal-Marts get tax breaks. Some have to pay surcharge taxes because they burden the community with excessive arrests for theft.
e) There is a negative perception that Wal-Mart hurts the feel of a community. And I agree. If the residents yearn for a town were everyone shops on main street, has a "community feel" and everyone knows everyone...then no, Wal-Mart isn't good....but in sprawling subdivisions where neighbors don't know each other..(like mine. My neighbor's house burned down and I couldn't tell the fireman how many people lived there, what they looked like, or anything) then Wal-Marts are generally accepted.
