If JL is good but overpriced, at what price point should they be?

I'm not even going to mention my post wasn't about your choice of car audio... moving on...

JL still exists because people like you will pay more for equipment with the JL name on it, because you want to impress other ignorant people, such as (many) X Type owners hope to do. My advice, save some money on car audio, and go buy yourself a fake Rolex, a Gucci belt, and a gold grill. That will get you the attention you need.

I know very little about car audio, but when I see a JL 1000.1, the first thing I think is "This guy payed $700 for a 1000 rms amp?!".

that exactly shows your mindset...

a fake rolex? so the name and manufacturer of the product doesn't matter, as long as it appears genuine?

no thanks i'll buy myself a real rolex... and real JL... and have an awsome sounding system that people know sounds good and loud by the name (provided i haven't ****ed up the install) and that caraudio.com posters hate...

you can't argue against the fact that JL makes exceptional product, and because of that and their built reputation they can charge more...

even tho there are ignorant jl fanboys, where do you think they came from... , most fans don't come from shitty lines like PA, audiobahn or sony...

i guess JL audio has some big top secret device that brainwashes people into liking their product and makes them into fanboys...

so go buy yourself a PA, sony, or boss 1000 watt amp, since 1000 watts is a 1000 watts right?

1200 watts from focal will cost you 3 grand

2000 watts from audison will cost ya around 2 grand

mcintosh will give ya 300 watts for 1500 buck... hahaha yeah i gues you are right JL's are over-priced

i disagree, its a subjective matter, the Xr's hurt my ears at higher levels, they are too "bright" again they sound amazing at lower levels but when going for a louder setup i perfer a silk, or textile dome to an aluminum, and i hate titanium tweets...
Disagree all you want, the XR's are superior speakers. To me the VR's (and any comps with non-metal tweets for that matter) sound dull and lifeless.

What about Zapco, Tru Tech or McIntosh which offer 1000w RMS models for that much or more? Do their owners clammer for attention as well?

I've owned JL products for over ten years. I like them. I like the quality of the build, materials, and sound. I've made the concious decision to pay for that as long as it's within my budget.

I don't do it to impress anyone or call attention. I do it because I like it. I've been pleased with their products and service, and as great company to the consumer, I've returned the favor by being a loyal customer so long as they keep producing products to my liking and within my budget.

Are they the greatest thing since sliced bread? Or course not. Are there other products out there similar for less? Yes. But everyone has the freedom to get what they want. It's a free country.

I'm a chevy guy (speaking strickly performance wise, I own a linclon for daily driving), and I've always messed around with muscle cars. Can I make one out perform a Porsche or Ferrari for way less than 100-200k? Yeah. But it's still not a Porsche or Ferrari. Does that make the Chevy any worse? No. It's a different flavor. Does that make the Ferrari look overpriced? No. Its a hell of a piece of technology and engineering.

Just FYI, I owned a pair of aluminum tweeters that had more detail, less sibilance (not bright or harsh at higher levels), and could get lower than a pair or silk tweeters I had. You can't judge a driver by one aspect of it (in this case just looking at cone material).

Don't forget about the other reason people hate JL here: Mass marketing. It's "cool" to own esoteric gear around here because it keeps you from being the average Joe. Being the average Joe is "lame" to people who believe that they are one of a few elite car audio enthusiasts and the more obscure the brand, they more elite they are. The same thing applies to those scene kids who think the more underground and obscure a band is, the more elite they are. The second somebody names something mainstream (no matter the quality), they are chastised since that is the symbol of the average Joe.

I'd say "no" he's not.

If you read a lot of the posts it's pretty obvious that JL gets hated on a lot for the simple reason that they are a large successful company that "everybody has." A lot of these people happen to be idiots and that is held against JL.

So true. Every internet message board is like this. Good post.

hahaha you've def. caught on... thats the same logic that creates many "FANBOYS"
i'll never once try to say JL is the BEST sub out there, but it's my fav. brand out there and i'm willing to pay the money to have it
because you're an idiot. this is EXACTLY what people are talking about. why the hell would you pay MORE for a WORSE product? JL is bad because it's a bad value. i don't get why that's hard to understand?

no they aren't bad products but they're such a bad value that they are indeed BAD. a car audio enthusiast that is in the know rolls their eyes when they see JL stuff, because likely it's in the hands of a 16 year old that doesn't know any better. have fun paying more for less, so stupid.

also stop comparing JL to Rolex. It's not special or "name brand" it's run of the mill overpriced shit. reminds me of a douchebag i saw selling his mustang on ebay , he recorded a video going around the car and when he went to the sound system he didn't even describe his subs all he said was they were, and i quote, "fosgates"

he thought that said everything but the funny part is they were 2 10" from the cheap shit punch series. i laughed.

he looked like exactly the type of douche that would say something like that too - and that ladies and gentleman is the average JL owner not very much different from the average RF owner

here's another example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/JL-Audio-12-W7-Brand-New-in-Box-Dirt-Cheap_W0QQitemZ300184371566QQihZ020QQcategoryZ18803QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

"I bought 2 12w7 and 2 1000/1 amps to put in my car but realized that was over kill, so i went ahead and installed just one of each.

So now i have a brand new JL sub to sell at a great price"

durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr good job genius how many Gs did you pay for that crap

isn't it convenient that their overpriced sub is 3 ohms and needs their overpriced 3 ohms stable amp to power it? JL is a marketing ploy to the average stupid american designed to rip them off on car audio and nothing more

This is the kind of ignorant crap I would expect from a person that would revive a 2 month dead, lame thread. A real enthusiast would actually look at the system. That's like saying everyone that drives whatever it is that you drive is a ***. Just because you are doesn't mean that it applies to all. To say that the average JL owner is a 16 yo punk is flat out dumb.

also stop comparing JL to Rolex. It's not special or "name brand" it's run of the mill overpriced shit.
I keep forgetting that since you can't afford it it must be "overpriced." There is a difference between JL or any other car audio "name brand" and the generic stuff on the market. Now Rolex, that's overpriced. They don't keep better time than my $30 Casio.

Well you're quite obviously the kind of douche that judges a product by the people that own it and not the product itself.

Jealous cause you don't have that kind of disposable income? Who cares. It's not any different than the guys who buy different stuff every month and sell their previous system at a loss.

isn't it convenient that their overpriced sub is 3 ohms and needs their overpriced 3 ohms stable amp to power it? JL is a marketing ploy to the average stupid american designed to rip them off on car audio and nothing more
Well they had D6 subs well before they ever made amps. Once you figure in impedance rise, the subs work just fine on a 4 ohm amp. They also work on a 2 ohm amp. Once again you show your blind, ignorant dislike for a successful company with proven products based solely on what you think you know and your opinion on what they should cost. Congrats on being a dumbass.
