is that the same for sealed? i had a 10w6v2 built to specs on quite a bit of power, but it peaked mechanically at 43-48 hz range and eventually the surround tore so should i have made a bigger box?
No, that peak was probably due to cabin gain.
If the suspension wasn't able to handle it self in the current box, it DEFINITELY wouldn't be able to do it in a larger enclosure, you would just make it worse.
W7s are dinosours and 800 bucks at CrutchfeildIMO they are 400.00 woofers(300 for sub +100 for name)
and an FI Q will own a W7 -
Yes, the W7 has been out for quite a few years, but that doesn't make it any worse. Fi is a great company don't get me wrong, they make great budget drivers and they offer different lines that suite people's tastes differently, but to say they outright "own" a W7 is retarded. If you care to backup your statements with testing that you've obviously done to prove this, then be my guest, but I'm not going to hold my breathe.
comparing tech in the 2 woofers is a joke too. I dont' care how new Fi is, there is nothing new about the design, uses older motor topology than the W7 I'd bet.
Unless Fi is using something other than an overhung design (and I don't think they do), then the W7 and the FI drivers use the same topology. The biggest difference is that the W7 is a HIGHLY optimized version, which as far as I know, no one has come even close to getting something EXACTLY like the W7, I'm talking about strictly overhung. Underhung, split gap, xbl, blah blah, try and achieve the same idea, but IMO they don't do it nearly as well as the W7. Not that these designs are bad, I love underhung motors, but the W7 WILL have less BL related distortion...ie at higher excursion levels when other designs fall off quickly.
With that said, at low volumes, the three designs will probably sound very similar, but the w7 shines at higher output levels.
