IB setup. Vents?

If this is for IB, leave the vent. That's the idea behind IB, getting as much airspace as you can so that it simulates having no box at all.
Thanks that was the sort of the answer I was thinking I was going to get. Just wasn't sure if I was having the right train of thought.

Come on, I thought we were all pretty familiar with cars here guys?

Wtf are these replies I'm seeing? Every car (or at least every car that's been I my shop) has vent baffles.

They are there for a reason, DONT PLUG OR BLOCK IT OFF.

Those cars that don't have the vents, (say Nissan 350Z) crack the windows an 1/8th inch automatically when the door is open and the. They shut fully after closed.

Is everybody seriously unaware, if you were to seal off that vent and shut your door on a hot summer day you are likely to break a window out.

Or, just have a hard time shutting the door all together.

Because as car audio guys, the idea of losing bass because of an opening in the trunk is down right terrifying.

Kind of like a drag racer saying he wanted to be lighter so he drained the oil out of his car.
Dumb
explain your analogy.

Are you pertaining that the vent to the outside of the car is needed for better acoustical output into the cabin?

Uh, did you not read my first post?
If you not jokingly asking this question, no the vent has nothing to do with acoustics.

And the analogy is that you will hurt your car.

There's a few other reasons behind that vent but they may be a little too advanced for this forum.

Those vents also serve to allow exhaust gasses or any other type of fumes that may wind up in the car, out of the car. My son has an Accord Hybrid and it has a ventilation system for the huge Nickel Metal Hydride battery bank, just in case it has a problem.

For an IB setup, the goal is to separate the front and back of the driver's piston. Once you've accomplished that, you have an IB setup. For other setups, if you aren't in the lanes, you'll never notice the loss of sound pressure and the meter might not either if you are. But let some exhaust/battery/fuel fumes build up in your trunk and see what happens.

For me, I don't like how the vent flaps around. You can hear it outside the car. So i think ill just make my own vent out of some sort of screen/mesh combo. Got some perforated stainless at work that I think could work perfect.

Explain how you think you can hear this vent. The actual baffle material is made out of a paper material and it could not possibly be making any substantial sound.

(I could be wrong, if your sub is strong it could make noise, however it should completely drown out any noise the baffle is making).

If you want to, just unscrew the baffle from the car. Sometimes they are held in by glue, sometimes rivets. I've seen a bafe on every car (Domestic and Foreign) I've ever torn apart.

And I've torn apart every manufacturer that is common to all of us.

I'm willing to bet it's not the vent you are actually hearing.

do tell.

also what about cars that also have a dash/firewall vent. Could you seal the trunk vent and have no ill effects?

The vents are for pressure differences. How that pressure difference happens could be a number of things.
Altitude, cabin blower motor (a/c full blast), door opening/closing, fumes, exhaust, heat pressure.

I'm sure I'm missing a few. Anything g that is sealed, is normally vented in one way or another. Engine crankcases are vented (Pcv), transmissions are vented because they build pressure due to temp differences. Rear axle housings are vented due to temp differences.

The cabin in automobiles are vented due to temp and pressure differences.

Doesn't matter where the vent is, I don't understand what exactly you are asking me.

If you have a car, there is a cabin vent and a trunk vent. You can't seal off the trunk vent and be ok with leaving the cabin vent alone.

Where is the pressure in the trunk going to go?

well in my car, the trunk shares airspace with the cabin. So I assume sealing off the trunk vent is OK. I read that the cabin vent is for air intake mainly, but can serve the same purpose as the trunk vent. So I was just wondering......
