You can say its similar to DC, because for an undetermined amount of time there is no oscillation. But again, time cannot be ignored. Call it similar to DC all you want, but it is not DC. DC does not oscillate, it has a constant offset from 0.
"there's no DC present in a squarewave, unless it's asymmetrical about the y-axis. In the time domain, the only way any waveform can have a DC component is for it to have a non-zero average value ... but the average must be computed over a long time ... a very long time indeed ... to qualify as DC" -

time is a major factor and time is not ignored, just for this example it is undetermined as of yet...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif...im sure someone can crunch numbers and figure out the time allocated with the peak of a clean signal vs. the time of a plateau of a clipped signal, but i dont want to and probably cant calculate that right now...(i failed calculus //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif)
You guys keep talking about a clipped signal like there some evil voodoo in it. A squared sine wave simply has more power (more area under its wave form if you will) than its non-squared counterpart. That's it, more power, period. THAT is what gives clipped amplifiers their notorious fame for killing speakers, the extra wattage. Nothing else. I dont know how else to express it, or what other experts I could quote that would get a few of you to actually believe me. So at this point all I can do is repeat myself. So assuming a fully clipped sine wave from the ridiculously clipped 800 watt amp, how is 1600 watts going to over heat the coil faster than 3000 watts? Id genuinely like to know the math behind your theory.
from what i understand, and i am no CA vet, it is the period of time that each is applied...a clean 3000 watts only applies for that instant that the signal peaks (high & low) whereas the clipped 1600 watts applies for the given length of time that said signal is clipped...now in the case of the op, he is/has been probably sending a clipped signal to the subs since the day he bought them if that is the case, the thermal wear and tear will build up exponentially with the clipped signal as to wear and tear that would be considered regular with clean power...like i said, im no pro at this nor do i claim to be but from what i gather, it has to do with heat application and dissipation over the course of your sub out session...correct me if im wrong, if you still dont understand my theory, i can try explain it better, later.
I can appreciate you trying to mediate here. I get your point. But the problem is 06alterego uses the term DC incorrectly, and then uses that as the basis for his theories on how square waves affect speaker performance. A case of flawed wording leading to a flawed theory. And he further intensifies the problem by insisting he is correct due to his vast knowledge and experience.
that is where i said he is partially correct, the clipped signal emulates a DC current and i think thats the message that 06 was attempting to make...
When I saw the first one of you guys act this way, I thought "wow there's an insecure person that cant take a joke"... but now it seems to be a common theme in this thread that Hawaiians lash out at main-landers. I mean really, dont you feel a little bit silly taking the Hawaii stuff so serious? I mean, I could say that your inability to link education with tourism is a sign of a lack of education, but you'd probably not take it as a humorous joke... so I wont say it.
Aloha.
brah, teasing us hawaiians is serious ****ing shit! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif just remember, like the american indians, we are a very prideful people, we have to be because that pride is one of the few original things that we have left since the overthrow. if you understood the history of our people, as well as the negative effects mainland transplants have had on our islands/lifestyle in the past 2 decades...im sure you'd understand. think about it this way, around the nation, the influx of non-english speaking mesicans have made people change their ways and lifestyles to accommodate these people...most americans dont like that fact. but in the mexican example we are talking about millions of ppl, in hawaii, we are talking a couple of thousand ppl who over the course of time pushed for changes in our lifestyle to accommodate their lifestyle and what they think should be "normal"
