I think i have an amp problem

Alright so i've had my kicker sx500.2 installed for about 4 days and when i set the gain i had to go into the 1v range with 5 volt preouts and i think its set pretty conservitively with a 0db 1000 hz tone at 21 volts. And today when i started my car the amp turned on and then shut off when the volume was at about 10 when i set the gain at 50 and it did that about 3 times shutting off then turning back on again. It wasn't hot at all so i don't know what the problem is. Any ideas
