I need some computer help

I got a desktop running XP and it doesnt work right. When it starts up it shows the background picture and nothing else. No icons or start menu and right and left clicks do nothing. I can open up task manager and run programs from there and everything works. I can get on the internet, open programs, files, etc.

Any ideas on whats causing it or how to fix it? There's a cookie waiting for someone that has any ideas.

when was the last time it worked?

try booting in safe mode (on bootup keep tapping f8 then select boot in safe mode, and if you can get to it, go to system restore and roll it back to a date which you knew it was working

Where do I find System Restore?

click run, browse for "explorer" launch that.(iirc its in c://windows//system32; been a while since using a pc)

see if that works...

I found system restore and it is in the process of going back a few days. If that doesn't work I'll try the explorer thing.

Do ctrl+alt+del and go to File -> New Task, and type in explorer.exe

Well it happened again. I tried going into control panel and it went back to the way it was before. Now when I try to do a system restore there is no restore points available.

ETA - I tried opening explorer.exe and it says I don't have permission to open it.
