HU's with DC-DC converter x hu's without it..

All decks and as far as I know ALL 12 volt electronics have a dc-dc converter. Just like home electronics have an ac-dc converter. As said above it more or less regulates the dc voltage being drawn by the power supply of the unit. The reason this deck has one exterior is most likely for reducing heat in the main chassis or lessening the likelyhood of induced noise into the system. Usually you only see exterior converters like this on more higher end units like the Clarion drz-9255.

I have a cheap jensen deck that has a converter. Really all it does is condition the power and regulates it, may even have a cap or two in it to compensate for voltage drops.
