HU's with DC-DC converter x hu's without it..

hi, i want to know exactly what does that small box attached to the back of some HU's do. I know it's a DC-DC converter and has something to do with RCAs or some sht... how does it work? does a hu with it has improved SQ from it? i realized the best sq hus have it, even thou i noticed alpine 9815, for example, doesn't have it, while 9835 has.. that's weird, considering they should be the same hu after all

so... does it do something or what?

If it's a straight DC-DC converter, it probably converts 12vdc to something higher so the amp itself draws less current and produces less heat. Either that or a few strategically laid capacitors to provide power conditioning.

Honestly I don't know, I'm just speculating.

my 9860 has one. It converts a small digital signal plug to either toslink or another kind of digital cable to use less space directly behind the radio.

i dont think the one on your 9860 is the same that he's talking about.. the 9855 had one too, i was under the impression it had to do with the rcas as well. possibly converting 12v to 4v pre-outs? i don't know i could just be sounding like an idiot.

some of the best sounding head units out there have it.. it must be some good shit yo //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

i would imagine they just relocate the voltage converter to the external box to lessen noise?
nope... some players have it, while others, don't...

look at these pictures

9815 (no converter)

notice also that the converter is meant for the preouts... any idea, anyone?

it's a voltage regulator for the cd transports

it runs high ampere, low voltage for less noise

and again, i imagine it's external for the same reason, to lessen interference

alpine says specifically to keep it away from the antenna and pre-outs
