huge system upgrades, 3-way morels, 12w6, take a look!

thats why its important to mess around with speaker locations before fabbing. also the midrange does not determine stage height. i believe its ike 5khz or up that will determine the stage height. so to compensate, you can put the tweeters in the pillars and your soundstage height problems are solved //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.
except that last time I checked, you wanted the mids and tweeters, and woofers as close together as possible, so if you have woofers in the kicks, and tweeters in the pillars, you now have like 3 feet between them...

not to mention, I thought we were putting the speakers in the kicks so that the signal path was as similar from left to right as possible, ofcourse, this is going to be most evident with the higher frequencies, but if we're putting the tweets in the pillars, then that goes out the window anyway!

well i was talking in terms of going active. if going active you can easily make it work. in a passive system that is going to be run on a 2 channel amp, yes definately because you can t/a one side, not per speaker. so if you put the tweets in pillars and midrange in kicks, you might have some imaging problems. but going active you have complete control of each speaker and you can definately make it work. you have t/a on each speaker and you can control the phase of each speaker (of course this is assuming you have the right processing equipment) if you are running an active front stage. here's a quote by werewolf on diyma (very smart guy, lol):

"Incidentally, there's another interesting conclusion to be drawn : physical separation of drivers in any single channel ... like mid & tweet, for example ... is not necessarily the horror of horrors it's often considered to be, particularly if the separation is vertical. Either the ear can't tell to begin with, since vertical localization cues don't even start until the treble, or spectral manipulation (EQ) can be employed to very convincingly trick the ear. Check the AES reference above. One of the most convincing soundstages I've ever heard ... with no obvious penalties in tonality, or coherence ... had midranges in the kicks and tweets in the A-Pillars. And I'm far, far from alone on this one...."

here's the whole article if you guys want to read: https://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5664.

again i'm not saying you can't get good imaging/staging/tonality of a 2 way set but there are obvious benefits when running a 3 way front stage against a 2 way.

^^
thats wrong, but anyhoo... lol

btw, you want a HIGH sound stage, not a low sound stage...

I've never worked out why exactly all you people like your music playing down by your feet, but anyway.... lol
The same reason you like to have a midbass shooting you in your calf.

To correct you, yes you want a high sound stage. Your tweeters will take care of your sound stage height. When you mount your midrange speakers in your kicks, hopefully you'll have enough sense to aim them on axis to get the most detail from them. They are not going to be shooting straight across. By putting them further away in front of you, you will deepen the sound stage to make it sound as though the music is coming from in front of you, rather to the sides. The purpose of a 3-way system is to limit the frequencies that the drivers are playing so that you don't stress them as much. Making them more efficient for the task. The way you are talking you would probably be happier with a full range driver.

yes, and theres benefits to running a 2 way setup over a 3 way setup aswell.
yes. ease of tuning, ease of speaker placement, ease of installation (less amps, less processors) and cost. besides that, overall 3 way > 2 way. this is IMO of course. but looks like this argument is over //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

yes... opinions...

in my opinion, I'd never buy a premade 3 way setup:

yes, custom passive crossovers...

last time I heard, they were doing quite well in home audio, for the past 50 years or so...

passive is active's *****. i know someone is going to bring up the whole crossover was specifically designed for the speaker theory, so i might as well tell you to shut up now.
