HU install...

So i've never installed a HU before...but i'm gonna do it this time around because it can't be that hard and i need to save some money. I just have a couple of questions;

Do i have to get a dash kit thing? I have a 98 camry and it looks to me like the top part of the factory stereo might pop out but i'm guessing i'm wrong as my last car required and aftermarket thingy. My second question is about harnesses....do i just follow the guide and like crimp the wires that go with each other together?? or can i get like an adapter so i don't have to do that, ii know on my last HU the guy just crimped all the wires together.
