How to test sub not in a car?

Are there any ways to test a sub without using a car? I have a few subs I bought and I wanna try them out but don't know how. I kind of tested them with a guitar amplifier and a synthesizer but it isn't enough wattage and enough bass to make the sub really move. What other ways are there? I see all these free air tests but don't know how. I've been searching all over the forums couldn't come up with anything yet. Thanks

test them? like to see if they work?. or just to see how they sound in free air or in a box?.

if you have an amplified receiver or a boombox with the separate speaker boxes or an car amp hock up to a 12v power supply. if its just to see if the coil is OK?, use a multimeter.

you can hock it up to a wall socket if using a:

120v to 12v 4amp transformer, if using a 4ohms sub= about 35wrms,

or

120v to 12v 6amp for a 2ohms sub= 75wrms

or

go with a higher secondary voltage for more power but don't go pass 35v at 2ohms if your sub cant handle 600+watts.

oh youll be playing a ruff 60hz.

Disclaimer:

research this more in depth before trying it, i will not be held responsible for any damage occurring from trying this.

To see if the coil is free and working, just touch the speaker leads to each post of a small 9v battery. It will push out and hold the cone in place untill you let it go. Will not damage the speaker or burn the house down. If you flip the wires it will pull in the cone as well so you can check full travel. It also helps to check for phase on already install speakers when you reconnect wires that may have been installed incorrect. This is an old trick from live PA systems years ago to get arrays in phase easily.

that's true, but unless is a small low power speaker it wont pull it or push it enough to check for full travel of the coil, but yes it will pull and push it in and out, great for checking the phase or polarity of the speakers when, all ready Hooked in the car for double checking polarity and too see if the coil is still good. i just hate the loud POP! sound. lol

you can get a power inverter and wire it to your car amp... or do you not have an amp and thats why you want to test it inside? they are made to work in your car, so that is the bast place to it
