How to CORRECTLY break-in a sub??

Do you NEED to break in your subs? No. Should you? Yes.

Read this...

What manufacture and (some)people mean by "breaking in" a sub is when a sub is new every moving parts are stiff and will take some moving back and forth to loosen up so the driver parameters stabilize and can be measured accurately for people who are critical about SQ and enclosure design - they measure their own driver parameter(Qes, Qts, dB@1 watt, etc.) instead of going with factory specs so they can make a perfect box for that particular speaker. I run my subs free-air from 20~60Hz for a few hours in my house with a home audio amplifier before I install them in my car, I do that to one - observe any abnormal mechanical noises/rattles to make sure I don't have a defective speaker, two - you can observe the Xmax to know how far the cone can travel without complaining and three - check the surrounds and make sure they're linear when the cone's moving. The bass will go deeper and takes less power to reach xmax when a sub is broken in.

The manual for Kicker's L7 subs specifically said you should break in the sub when it's brand new so it'll "sound better afterward." Many home theater audiophiles says the same thing when they test a new set of speakers or powered subwoofer - they usually say the highs are too bright or the bass is too tight and spends a few days if not weeks playing the speakers daily before they write a review about it. Critical audiophiles even go the distance and say break-in procedures are mandatory for amplifiers(especially tube amps - they NEED break-in AND warm-up time), passive crossovers and high-power multichannel receivers.

If you're gonna spend hundreds or thousands on subs then why not do a proper break-in especially if it doesn't cost a penny? All the car manufactures say you should take it easy and let the new engine "break-in" before taking it to high rpm, do everyone do it? No, and those cars are the ones that will have engine problems later on.

There are some educated consumers out there after all! Break in is critical for ANYTHING with moving parts.

Will the t/s specs settle in and change within a given variance overtime? Yes.

Is "breaking in" a speaker critical to utilize it? No.

A speaker will naturally "break in" during normal use. Yes, that's right, you can actually use your speaker right out of the box when you buy it. Imagine that.

I have a Polk SR coming in the mail. Pulled this from the manual online:

SR Subwoofers require a pre-conditioning

period because the suspension (spiders and

surround) is stiff when brand new. We

recommend playing your SR Subwoofer

at moderate listening levels for anywhere

from 40 to 60 hours before you really crank

up the volume. A pre-conditioning period

helps loosen the suspension for better

transient response and lower bass

frequency extension.

They don't mention free-air breaking in, but I think I'll just do it the traditional "at mod volume" way because I'm not in a huge rush. Plus I spend at least 8 hours per week in my car... it will loosen up in no time!

Just out of curiosity, exactly how much power, and in what type of environment (just set it on a table?) do you guys break in a sub freeair to know that excursion is nearing xmax?

If you continue to break in woofers the way you do. the suspension of the woofer will last you a life time. If you just put it in and blast on it to it's full recommended limits, there WILL BE suspension failure, probably not much, but in a case like my 15s having 8 spiders, THEY TAKE TIME. The manufacturer told me that I should expect them to finally loosen up and be broke in after about 80 hrs of music, or 20 hrs of free-air on a test tone. Both methods to break in a woofer work just the same, bot obviously 20 is less than 80, but at the risk of driving people crazy, I am going the music at lower volume route. To answer your question plain and simple (1) a woofer DOES need a break in period, the length of time depends on the construction of the woofers suspension. (2) you can break in a woofer by playing music at a lower volume, usually 1/2 - 3/4 maximum recommended input of the woofer or (3) by playing it free-air on a test tone at approximatly 1/2 it's excursion. I have broken in a HO woofer incorrectly and too hard, and seen the spiders begin to crack, specifically at the triple joint, so there IS indeed a reason to break in a woofer. I hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy the bass. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/driving.gif.c4dead4599dda895032b63e51f52b126.gif

That's great and all, but in no way does it make me want to properly "break in" my subs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

So, let me get this straight. Because you have wasted more time on the internet than me and posted 15,xxx times more crap than me, that makes you smarter or more educated, how does that work? Especially considering the statement I made, AGAIN, was directed to the tread starter as informational, not towards anyone else.
