How to CORRECTLY break-in a sub??

thats not totaly true...
take a sub new in the box and test it with a wt3 and see what the specs are then put 20 or so hours of play time and then re test it. the specs will not be the same. most subs will play lower after a few hours of run time then they will bnitb.
That's not the point he's making.

He said play it at low volume for a period of time vs. playing lots of power at the beginning will yield the SAME results. The suspension will soften regardless of how you go about it.

Step one: Wire sub in parallel (if more than one coil.)

Step two: Connect wires to standard two-prong electrical cable.

Step three: Plug cable in wall.

Step four: Unplug when sub stops moving.

There. Broke it in.

Of course you have. If you've used a subwoofer, you've broken it in.

I've never set aside dedicated time to follow a specific routine with the intent of breaking in a speaker.

I usually play at 20hz at medium volume for ... few seconds. Broken in! time for full tilt //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i have background in both physics and mech.......cant answer the question intellectually, but a speaker does not need a dedicated routine, enclosure, time to break it in. It will happen.... just let it flow.

bump..

somebody who has an education/background in physics oR mech engineering that can intelligently answer this question?
I've taken my fair share of physics and engineering classes... and I can assure you the best way to break in a sub is to throw it against a wall, repeatedly...

Ive been building speakers for awhile, been winding magnetic coils the size of city bus before too. Let me tell you, depending on the material of the spider..how many layers of material, weather it has been expoxy impregnated....etc. These factors all come into play. Yes, the sub's electrical and mechanical charastics WILL change after the inital bit of use. But really, who gives a shit unless you're competing in contests with burps? Just enjoy your godamn speaker.

If you continue to break in woofers the way you do. the suspension of the woofer will last you a life time. If you just put it in and blast on it to it's full recommended limits, there WILL BE suspension failure, probably not much, but in a case like my 15s having 8 spiders, THEY TAKE TIME. The manufacturer told me that I should expect them to finally loosen up and be broke in after about 80 hrs of music, or 20 hrs of free-air on a test tone. Both methods to break in a woofer work just the same, bot obviously 20 is less than 80, but at the risk of driving people crazy, I am going the music at lower volume route. To answer your question plain and simple (1) a woofer DOES need a break in period, the length of time depends on the construction of the woofers suspension. (2) you can break in a woofer by playing music at a lower volume, usually 1/2 - 3/4 maximum recommended input of the woofer or (3) by playing it free-air on a test tone at approximatly 1/2 it's excursion. I have broken in a HO woofer incorrectly and too hard, and seen the spiders begin to crack, specifically at the triple joint, so there IS indeed a reason to break in a woofer. I hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy the bass. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/driving.gif.c4dead4599dda895032b63e51f52b126.gif
