I think it is probably just a form of confirmation bias. When a liberal is gay, it's not really news or surprising because it is understood that gays are generally liberal. When a conservative comes out, or is forced out of the closet, it is a surprise and newsworthy, given their typical stance on such things. So I would have to see statistics that demonstrate that there are actually more gay Republicans than gay Democrats before I attempt to address the question.
