Home audio...

Hey guys, so I am currently helping my father build a garage, and in the workshop area of the garage he is putting a couch, his extra 62inch, and some sound to match.

First, a woofer is a woofer; right? Home audio vs Car audio is the same gig, to a extent, no?

So, I have two extra L5s, not top grade subs, however, they will do I assume, I'll later upgrade him to L7 Xs or something, but for now my spare L5s will work seeing as he doesn't want to spend much on it, as it's already a 65k garage.

So I question was, what sort of box would one be looking at for a area as large as a 2200 Sqfoot garage? We aren't trying to get thump all around the garage, only in a corner, was considering putting it in the rafters, or perhaps in the wall, with the studs.

I assume sealed, would I want to run the higher box size like a 2cube sealed?

Ported seems like a no go, maybe I am incorrect, anyone have input?

Thanks to any and all help provided.

if its for home audio you should build a tline subwoofer box
I thought about it and putting it in the ceiling, seeing as there is just mass amounts of room up there. T-Line ported in a house? Would it be desirable though? For movies... I'm going for pure SQ. When a explosion in a movie sets off, the sub best be gound poundin too.

Get yourself an older carver tfm series amp. And a pair of cerwin vega 12 towers. They will rock your garage and sound good doing it. You will have less tha 500$ in it. You wont be dissapionted.

What size and coils are the L5's, 12D4? If they're 8's or 10's, don't bother. Final imp/ohm load would dictate the wiring, amp, and enclosure options.

How will they be powered, pro audio or sub-plate amp? Number of channels, rated power, final load, built-in crossover(s), etc have impact on options too.

Underpowered, probably ported low with big port area. Overpowered (headroom), your choice.

I've been using car audio subs in HT and in-home band/concert level stereo systems for a couple years now and, through research, and trial and error, have ended with excellent results.

For HT, I currently run (4) 12's sealed off a Dayton plate amp with the subs inside the coat closet next to the TV and F.R. speaker. By front-firing and being the same distance away as the front speakers, the lows blend great and time-alignment is no issue. Sh*t slams, gets stupid low, and sounds incredible. It kinda works like a quasi-4th order with variable tuning, depending on how much/little the door is cracked opened.

To get sick loud, I'm also running (3) JL 18W6's IB off a Crown XLS2000, mated with a pair of Peavey PV215's on a Crown XTi1000, all crossed through a BBE 382iSW maximizer. I've posted a few pics before, but here's an early photo taken right after initial installation. I still haven't built the cover yet, but I don't mind having them right there for all to see either //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

You don't have to spend a lot to end with great results either, but it definitely takes decent planning ahead of time. Good luck!

what do you have for the surround speakers? you want to be able to blend well with them, meaning the subs need to reach high enough. i wouldn't go higher than l5 for what you are doing, in fact, l3 might be more ideal, since the efficiency should be higher. yes, a horn or t-line would do well for ht. after-all, those enclosures were actually adapted for car audio application..... look up a bunch of box designs. what i would do is load them as close as you can to each-other, clam-shell at the back of a horn. for simplicity, you could always just go real big ported, tuned low. if you can't get them as much rms as they need, you can go even bigger than recommended. my first ht sub was an old pyramid12 in a sono tube under the stairs. that ran quasi-6th order by tipping the open end on the floor. that one got stupid loud on almost no power
