here are some pics of my new '90 300zx... bought fresh off ebay. I'm having problems with the system and its power, this is a description of what you see:

Pioneer AVX-505 & AVMP5000 Audio/Video Unit (Dated)

Audio Control Overdrive

Audio Control Epicenter

Audio Control EQT's (2)

Audio Control 4XS

Rockford Fosgate Punch 400x4

Rockford Fosgate Punch 40x2

Rockford Fosgate Punch 200x2 (2)

Kicker Solo-Baric Competition 12's (2)

Infinity Beta Five (2) Mids and Infinity Beta One Tweeters (2) housed in custom Sound Q door pods.

Optima Red Top up front and (2) Optima Yellow Tops in back (all dead from storage) (New 800 CCA battery was installed for sale)

Ohio Generator 200amp Competition Alternator (uninstalled)(New factory TT alternator just installed for sale)

All power, speaker, interconnects are the high end Monster Cable

So as you can see there is alot of bump here.... but what i would like to do is tone it down and make it a daily driver system. The competition alternator was taken out and the batteries are dead. If I were to buy new batteries the Alt and batteries would hold me for maybe 6 months then die on me. I was thinking of winding down the Alt to maybe 140-160 pulling the batteries and filling them in with 12 single farad capacitors.

If anyone here has any suggestions to making this a reliable system pls give me the know how. If you agree with my idea let me know what are the best products for this project. (capacitors, more cable?, batteries again?) the simpler the better

thanx guys!

ohh also if anyone has a cheap idea for the cosmetic work needed to cover audio... (carpet, fiberglass?)

thanx again

That's some old-school goodyness right there! I hope you realize what you have //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

No need for a cap. Why'd you yank the HO alt? A HO Alt is 10000 times better than a cap.

I'd keep the HO alt in there, the battery under the hood and maybe, just maybe, one in the back. That should be plenty good for a daily driver system.

Previous owner guaranteed a max of 6 month use before the Alt/battery would give in ... because the power would be too much for the supporting equipment, I would like to keep the alt, but like I said it may need to be winded down. i like the Idea of keeping another battery as long as I won't have to change it every 6 months... help! more suggestions.... bump

You're kidding me right?

With a 'HO' alternator and two batteries, I doubt that the equipment You've listed would cause dead batt's anytime withing the next 2 years.

yeh you do have some pretty nice stuff there. For real tho, you really only need 1 battery maybe 2 as squeak said. and neither of those amps pull enough current to drain your battery.

but if you wanna play it 'safe', buy a yellowtop for under the hood, keep the 200amp alternator in there, and you will not have to worry about voltage drops again (well at least while your car is on)

btw, nice ride you got there

Wait I have 2 amps? I thought I only had one.... ok so you're saying one yellow top what brand ? $ ? and what about the inside? battery their too? what kind? if none, how do I take care of the wiring? ohh... and no capacitors? omg, i'm going nuts. This is good advice though just need to simplify and clarify as I am a newbie to the audio world...tx

....about the ride here are some pics of her i think will name her Jasmine

Er.. if you still have those two yellowtops in the back, just throw that HO alt in the front and you'll be good to go for a LONG time.
well those batteries are dead, need new ones... do those fit under the hood? That's what 'skeptical' recommended...

The car has a New 800 CCA battery under the hood is that good enough, if so do I just complement that one with 1...2 yellow tops in the back again? How much? what brand? what other small details am I missing?

sounds like you got an electrical problem. theres no reason for you to fry alts and bats like that. thats just rediculous. i think the seller is trying to cover an electrical problem with a "system is TOOO powerful" lie.

think you might be on to something... I hope this is not the case, I actually spoke to the guy today and told to me to just buy the yellow tops for the back... stick to the stock alt and charge the batteries at night, every night. He said he advices to do this because the 200 amp alt will, when loaded (stereo on) put a tremendous level of stress on the belt and pulley to turn it and therefore robbing the motor of up to 25hp!!! so no way do I want sacrafice performance for audio, the car is already that much heavier with that box in the back.

I don't just want to put aside a high performance amp... so what are my options?? He also said I could wind down the alt... wtf do I do with this system... :stuck:

that guy is an idiot. dont listen to anything he says. your alt CONTINUOUSLY charges your bat. theres nothing you can change about that. "charging" your bat at night means waste some gas, thats all. i have a 160amp HO alt and a 1500 watt system, and im fine. and no, you will not lose HP from your alt either. there will be only a minimal unnoticeable amount of hp change with a HO alt, if any at all. how many watts are you pushing? im not too familiar with RF gear, but judgeing by your first post it looks like your only pushing ~640watts. and thats not alot. well, its decent, but you, BY NO MEANS, need more than 1 bat with only 640 watts. also, you'd probably be fine with only a 140amp alt and a BIG 3 upgrade. if i were you, id take the car in somewhere to have the electrical system checked. cause i think this guy is trying to screw you over man. sorry.
