Hey guys, I have a few questions. I listen to mainly drum n bass music, and some rap. I have a 97 civic hatch so its primo for bass. Hatches pound!

Not only that but I just sound deadened MY WHOLE CAR! It sounds like a mercedes when you shut the door

anyway, here are the questions.

Im trying to design my system to be good for drum n bass music.

I was thinking about getting two 12" subs in a a slot vented box.

I dont know what to get but id like to stay under 100-150$ per sub [ebay has good prices]

right now i have a pioneer 800w mono amp, and a 4 ch amp. I dont know if ill be using them or not. I would like to get a nice vented box with some 12's please help

I love it when people poast threads asking people advice on what to buy and then don't supply a price range that they can afford. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

yeah but honestly how good do they sound in slot vented enclosures? Im kinda a noob to car audio. I used to have two sony 12" subs in a slot vent box, with a 2000W volfenhang 2ch amp powering them, and they hit harder than a drunk hillbilly getting home to no dinner. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

If you listen to mainly D&B, you want to go with an entirely kerfed box (slot port, but kerfed) or as many subs as you can sealed with a lot of power. This depends on how "loud" you want it.

I listen to a lot of electro and D&B and if you want the best SQ you can get without group delay, go kerfed or best sealed. If you just want it loud then do whatever you want.

i listen to alot of technical itch, and dieselboy. the darker dnb. i found that the sealed box didnt sound as good as the slot vented?

also, what is a kerfed box? is that where the slot is in the middle, but then has a panel that opens behind the sub? if that makes sense... kinda like a maze

Sealed boxes are just as capable of medium power SPL as vented boxes if built properly. Problem is people take the same sub and swap it between prefab boxes and make a judgement.

If you really want technical kick bass you need to run a sealed box for the cone control because in your price range you won't be running subs built well enough to have that kind of control in the spiders and voice coil. For increased control, you should look at DVC subs.

One thing is for sure, if you are looking for technical music you are already pushing it wanting 12's and just throwing the dream out the window wanting vented 12's. Especially less expensive vented 12's. It's like the perfect storm of "not gonna happen".

I recommend you either go cheaper and get these:

Or put a little money into it and get these:

Whichever you choose, build a box especially for THOSE subs and don't listen to prefab boxes.

im not going to get pre-fab. Im going to make the box to fit in my hatch.

anyway, its going to find an amp that will power those subs you linked. they are 1000/500rms. the volfenhag amp i was looking at is 1800w/600rms @ 1ohm

I just wonder if i can feed it the 1800w without damaging it. I know the RMS is the important part. but will the peak hurt it?

I plan on getting a DVC sub, just for better wiring options. and when i said technical itch, thats a dj, not technical bass if thats what you thought?

If that's what you mainly listen too, I don't care if you have the best controlled subs around; If your ear is attentive to detail at all, you will get group delay in a regular slotted port. Dieselboy and TI are very fast and change frequency often. Sealed will perform best for SQ considerations.

A kerfed box is where the right-angle of the port is "rounded." Do a search and see what I mean.

alot of cheaper subs sound nice in hatches //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Im glad ebay has like last year models, so you can get them cheaper //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

anyone know any good ones under 150 on ebay? if i have to ill buy one 12" at a time.

but i just wonder if the volfenhag mono 1800w/650rms amp is good? i had the 2000w 2ch and it was pretty nice

Agreed with this here. Since you have the unit pulled out of the car/dash...test it at your car battery directly for operation. very simple to do...

Yeah, put the probes on the power wire and ground wire of the amplifier. Multimeter on DC. Do not put it on the wires that go to your speakers. M
