help with bmw radio

my sister has a '96 bmw 318ti with the factory system. it has 10 speakers, a factory amp, and a radio/tape player. when you turn up the radio, the left side speakers fade in and out and also produce some static. one of the speakers in the left rear is blown. is the blown speaker causing the static, or is it the factory radio, or could it be a wiring problem? would new speakers fix the problem, new radio, or new everything? i know some stuff about car audio, but the bmw is beyond me. any help/advice/tips would be appreciated. thanks.
