Help with a Box

I plan on buildin (actually my father will) a box to house 3 10's and their recommended volume is 1 cu. ft.

1. What is the best material to use to build a box?

2. What does it mean when it says the speaker is best sealed? Does it mean no ports mounted on the outside, or does it mean mounted on the inside(so the speaker is inside the sealed box?

3. So it's better if you could go like 1.2 cu. ft. per sub?

1. What is the best material to use to build a box?
The material of choice for sub boxes is Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF, also called Melamine), 3/4 inch thick.

2. What does it mean when it says the speaker is best sealed?
A sealed enclosure means no air leaks of any kind behind the speaker. No unplugged holes, no "ports", no gaps in the wood joints.

3. So it's better if you could go like 1.2 cu. ft. per sub?
Going +/- 20% different than the recommended volume makes little difference. In general, bigger gets you lower frequency response and smaller gets you tighter sound quality.
