Help w/ pioneer deh-225

I am out of a job, so I could not be picky with my h/u. I got lucky when a friend of the family told me he had a spare one I could have along with a sub and amp. Unfortunately for me, he did not have the wiring harness that came with the h/u originally.

I have two questions.

1.)Where can I get a wiring harness that will fit properly (with my 1985 caprice classic)

2.)is there a tutorial or somthing around here on this site that will show me how to hook it up, and how to get the battery chord from the amp, through the firewall into the hood area to be connected to the battery.

For a wiring harness your best bet might be eBay unless someone has one for an older Pioneer laying around (which is actually possible to tell the truth - there's no telling what the various members here might have tossed in a box somewhere ~ if you needed a harness for a Kenwood deck I'd be able to hook you up easily)

For that Caprice you're wanting to install in if I recall correctly that vintage Chevy had a dual-shaft radio as the OEM unit, correct? (stereo with the volume knob sticking out the the left of the "nose" of the unit and the tuning knob sticking out to the right?)

You're going to have to do some surgery to the dash to get a single-DIN (rectangular-faced like almost all common stereos nowadays) headunit in there for starters if I'm right.

I dont know if i understand what you are saying. but If i understand right u mean,

(volume)o_____o(tuning)

correct? because if so, then no the volume and tuning are above eachother, but being fairly unexperienced in installing electronics into cars, I cant figure out how to disconnect the stock radio from the stock heater, or even just remove both...I will post some pictures of the stock gear shortly to show u what it looks like from the front, and as good as i can show u from behind.

As far as the wiring harness, you are sure I cant just go to a store like best buy (not sure if they sell them seperatley) and purchase any old pioneer harness and just rig it up?

Okay - I know the dash setup you speak of.

I had a Caprice like that which I drove back when I drove cabs.

You won't need to disconnect it from the heater. Once you get that dash bezel off you'll see that the radio and the HVAC controls are two separate units stacked one atop the other.

No, it's not very likely that Best Buy would have a harness for that Pioneer laying around. I'm not aware of anywhere you can just buy a harness like that (even if it were a more current unit) separately from buying the whole HU though I could be mistaken.

Like I said - your best bet there might be eBay.

where can i get the wiring kit thing? and how much? is there a retail store that carries them?

also im not sure if they would have one for such an old car, but i guess 85 caprices are a kind of comonly customized car ya know? idk

I was playing with it, and i figured most of it out, i found and disconnected all the wires i will need with the new h/u, now im looking for the plastic install kit peice so i can take out the radio and the heater will still sit nicely above it.

Here is a picture of the sub and amp that were given to me.
