help on sub decision

I have narrowed it down.

12" infinity reference's (not kappas/perfects)? or 10/12" rockford fosgate punch stage 1 or 2?

they are both in my price range since im on a short for cash.

while i'm at it..

1. both series has both single and dual voice coils. is there a difference, because they are nearly the same price? this will be a major factor in my decision if it makes a difference.

2. there are different ohms selection for each. is 8 better than 4?

3. how come the peak power for the fosgate's is way lower than the infinity's? (400-500w peak, 200w rms) vs (1000-1200w peak, 300w rms) I thought the higher the peak the better?

Any help/opinions would be appreciated. sorry for the lack of knowledge and the multiple questions, im a newbie:uhoh: THANKS!

To answer your questions, I'll ask a few myself.

1. What is your price range for subs?

2. Have you already bought an amp? If no, how much are you willing to spend on one?

To answer the ones I know.

2. Different ohm loads, which we like to call impedance, is just for ease of install. Some amps like 1 ohm, some 2ohm, some 4 ohm. It won't affect the woofer at all.

3. Peak power is more or less meaningless. It's there to fool your into thinking the higher number makes a better woofer. Peak power is like saying you car can do 200 MPH, but only if it's going down a really steep hill. RMS power is like saying your car can do 100 MPH on a flat road.

thanks for the replies.

price range for sub in all (either for 1 or 2) - $0-120 yikes

no amp yet. was going to work around the subs. price range for amp - around $100-150? is that good enough?

not to be such a newb, but are these RE subs you guys are talking about like elite or something? i have no idea.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

they aren't the best things ever, but for the price they are good subs, and since your on a budget, that is what i would recommend, and I am sure no one you know has any, so be different

i think if you put them in the right ported application they will outdo the infinity's. The rf stage 2 subs aren't that bad, i have heard two 12's ported and they were pretty loud. The dual voice coil doesnt not make it any better, it just gives you more wiring options. But the re's are definitely the best deal IMO.

You could get an alpine type R of the net for around a 100 bucks. 500rms rating and sound pretty good. I like mine in a sealed application, but most people will tell you to port them. So it is up to you. You seem new to audio so when I say sealed or ported I mean the box the subs go in. Have to take that into consideration. That is alot of the install to getting any sub to sound right. Good luck!
