Apologize sincerely but not overdoing it, and show him you have made some sort of change. Like bring in a planner or something to show him that you're trying to improve yourself. Don't lie. My friend made up this elaborate lie once, and the professor demanded proof when the guy said his girlfriend was ***** he had to go to the hospital etc. He obviously didn't have it, so he apologized and said he was really nervous and just didn't want to fail the exam and didn't know what else to say. The professor told him that he despises liars and there is nothing he can do at this point.
