help me build this computer

Best bet is right there. If not tigerD check out newegg.
TD FTL...i used them for a long time untill i discovered New Egg...As someone who runs there own computer business, I order alot..and i mean alot of parts, new egg is def one of the best places...

If you want to build one, dont buy a bare bones, just build it all from sratch and use what you want.

And I hate to say this...but if you are looking to save money, buy a pre-built(only if your on a low budget) us builders cannot beat the price anymore of low end computers with companies like dell popping them out for our cost...

I picked one up last week from dell because it was to good to pass up..I havent used it much because I have way to many computers in the house as it but figured it would make a good storage machine and something for guests as no one touches my laptops or custom builts but me..But it does run good so far..

I got a 160gig hd, 1 gig of ram, 20in screen, DVD-R, Dual Core processor, an ok video card, and Vista for a tad over 500...

Vista 199

A high end LCD like dell provides 250-300..

Your already at the price I paid for the whole shbang..

And you still need

HD

Processor

MB

Case

Power Supply

Cables

and then some

And that doesnt include the warranty (1 year but can go longer) and tech support if needed..

I have actually never bought anything from tigerD, bought multiple items from newegg and never had a single problem from one.

I would agree on the "buying prebuilt", especially if you've never built a computer. Stay away from dell/HP and get you parts and ask a pro to build it for ya. Would be quicker and not to expensive in the end.

Yea you really cant beat pre-built computers for $500 that come with LCD's and warranties.

I agree with everything, cept the GAYti card. Hate ATI, my past 2 cards and cousins card have sucked so bad.
Well im not to sure on the best $52 card out there, lol. But if it puts out picture then it will work for his use. Back to STALKER, lol.

Just to change a few things from the parts the other guy listed...

Fortron 400w PSU IMO, Fortron makes some of the best PSUs around, especially for their price. When you're on a budget, they're the brand to go with, and this is coming from a guy with a 550w Antec. I've built so many PCs for people with Fortron PSUs, and they simply rock. Of course, you don't need anywhere near 400w (you could easily get by with 250-300), but this will leave you open for a GPU upgrade should you choose to game in the future.

Gigabyte Mobo Good brand, integrated GPU, cheaper price.

I had a Fortron AX500-A in my old rig and it was the bomb. Now im using the OCZ GameXStream 600 and loving it.

IMO, Asus made the single best s939 board of all time, the A8N-SLI-Premium (at least, it WAS supreme, until the A8N-SLI-32x came out >_>). Overall, it has everything. OCs well, no chipset fan (which is common now, but was a great feature then), as well as one of the first boards to support X2 processors.

I wouldn't trade this thing for any other s939 board. I do agree that MSI sucks though >_>

Ah, that is true. I have seen a few reviews make mention of that, but I always buy Corsair RAM (XMS for my machines, Value for others) which generally always works w/ Asus boards.

Dont group dell and HP together. Dell makes an amazing computer. But that was my point. Buy Prebuilt, not custom built from a builder. I mean if your going for a high end computer year, but low end, you cant beat Dell or Gateways Price(although I wont buy gateway anymore) And the warranty and customer service. If the hard drive shits the bed at 2am, which one of them is going to have someone ready to answer the phone at that hour and ship that part out to you overnight express first thing in the morning?

I cant compete locally anymore for the low low end computers...

after not reading this thread at all besides the first post, im going to have to recommend you not go with that setup and instead use a more current socket if you MUST custom build your pc

but I would just buy a low end dell when theres a deal going on, u will be hard pressed to find a better pc for the money

the last computer i built was

Antec 1080amg

Asus A7N8X Deluxe

AMD Barton core

thermalright SLK heatsink

cosair xms

ati 9800 pro

Does that sound dated //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Psh, that's not dated at all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I still keep my old 333Mhz PII around, just because it's fun playing with old hardware (DOS games on old hardware > DOS games on DOSBox).

go opty dual core, cheaper, and all optys have 1mb of cache, easly overclocked also, i got one(Opty 170) but i need to buy the rest of the comp to let it see action

Dell has very good service, and their computers are very reliable from my experience.

Then I said **** this, and built my own.

My first board was a Gigabyte on a P4, socket 7XX I believe. Very, very solid board. My graphis card was a Ti4600. Archaic now, but it ran my favorite RTS's and such pretty well. Plus, I built that computer out of existing parts and what money i made mowing grass. Not bad for a 14 year old, eh?

My next board was an MSI running an Opty 144. Solid board, sucked for OCing though.

Now I'm at an ASUS SLI-Deluxe. Great OCer, and great flexibility in the BIOS. My only complaint is that it took two boards befoe I got a working one.

To the OP, buy a prebuilt. Building a computer is very fun and rewarding. However, for the inexperiencd, can be very troublesome. You're going to college, you're going to do homework I imagine. You need something that will run reliably and have support for a major problem. Do some research and such in the meantime, and when you get the money, build your own.
