Do you have a DMM? If you don't, go out there right now and buy one.

Check to see what kind of voltage you're getting at the output terminals...like previously mentioned, the amp was most likely clipping.

my gains were set at 3/4 of max...so the sub was in reality probably seeing 800-850w

now that proves that post count doesnt mean a thing.

It is an invaluable tool. You should always have a use for it. You should go pick one up anyways to test the amp out so you know for sure that this is the reason why the driver failed. Granted, you cannot check for clipping with it, but it will give you an estimate of the power output.

Lol me and my friends ran a Tantrum 1200.1 to a 12" Avalanche for over a week and it didn't blow... those gains must be ungodly high in comparison to what they should be.

Experiment with it, too. You'll find that your amplifier is capable of what appears to be many many more 'watts' than it's rated;

v=sqrt(impedance(desired wattage))

So if you want 1000 watts into a 2 ohm load,

sqrt(2*1000)=44.72

If you crank your gains, you may well get a 75 volt readout;

Nope. Clipping. That's why you use the amp's rating as a guide for setting your gains.

and if the reading is above that...do i just decrease my gain level?

Yes decrease it untill you read 31.62v

40 is moderately loud to me...but hey, thats just me.

nd i dont have an amp powering my speakers, so i have to crank it up a lil bit louder to even it out.
