Around here most people use the 243 for coyotes, bob cats, and a general vermin gun in the back glass of their feed truck. It and 22-250's are what a lot of kids start out with because the kick is pretty tame. The same way that 12gauge is more efficient but alot of kids start out with a 20 gauge or 410.Good info, but I will disagree with the classification of the .243 as only a good small game round.
I started out deer hunting with the old man's .222 Savage 340D. Outstanding groundhog rifle up to about 150 yards, but really not enough power for deer (though I killed a few!). He found a good deal on a Remington 760 GameMaster, which is the one I have hunted with for 30 years, now.
Good shot placement has allowed me to reach out and kill deer from 300 yards.
Def doesn't have the knock-down power of a 30-06, but I have never lost a deer that I had a clear shot on.
One option that I am surprised not to see talked about yet is the .270....very solid deer round.
your about 40% off bud's gun shop price who is about the cheapest around. Then add another$25+ for FFL charges.80$ mosin nagant ftw.
I guess it depends on his definition of target shooting. A good bolt action with the a accurate caliber like a 30-06 or 308 is going to beat an AR everyday of the week. There is a reason my they used Remington 700's chamber in 308 for sniper rifles in Vietnam while the infantry carried M16's. The rounds cost quite abit more than a 556x39 or .223. I depends on how much he is going to shoot. It he is want to go to the range once a week or shoot 500+rounds a year or if a couple box is all he needs.I think 90% of you are missing the fact it won't be a hunting rifle. It will be a target rifle that gets used for hunting for small amounts of time.
I took it as point and shoot stuff. I guess I always forget there are longer ranges out there. I live in a place I can go to the farm and shoot when ever I want I don't have to deal with gun range bs.I guess it depends on his definition of target shooting.
