Getting daughter new car stereo and need assistance!

My daughter has a 2001 Grand Prix SE. I went to a local shop and the same stereo they want $200 I can get for $120. They also said there is a kit that is $150 that needs to be used.

I was going to do this myself, or at least try.

This is her dash:

This is the stereo I think I might get her.

Unless anyone thinks this is a bad idea. This is not the one I was quoted. The one I was quoted I've read bad reviews on. She wants blue tooth and pandora capabilities.

Will this work for her car? Also, what do I need to install this, any kits?

Can anyone help an old man out?

If no one ends up helping you out on here. Check out Crutchfield's Outfit my car. It will give you a good baseline to figure out what stuff you need to install the radio.

Added: Especially if the GP comes with the BOSE upgraded factory stereo. They are generally a PITA to work around compared to non-upgraded stereo.

You'll need a vehicle-specific plastic adapter to mount the new radio in the car.

Can get one online pretty cheap, or might be able to find one at Walmart.

Dash panels on early 2000's GM vehicles are easy to work with. I've done a few. Trim panels pop off, and then there are some bolts/screws holding things in place. The factory wiring harness should unclip from the back of the radio.

Find a wiring diagram for your vehicle and cut/splice the new headunit's wiring harness to the existing wires.

Go to Crutchfield.com. Fill in all the details of the vehicle and they will show you what's compatible. Take that info and shop around...Amazon, eBay, etc. You'll find what you need for less.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I don't know if it has onstar since it is in the shop until Sunday night. I don't drive it so I don't remember if it has it on it. I assume it doesn't but I want to know for sure.

Thanks again!

Crutchfield is overpriced //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
for head units they tend to price moderately competitive most of the times. Subs, amps wire ETC all are overpriced there but head units besides the upper end expensive ones are generally standard pricing. You get a quality dash kit along with wire harness and if you look on amazon including the dash kit, you are paying for the same thing but with a cheaper low quality brand of dash kits. Crutchfield customer service and payment/shipping is top notch as well, I actually would not hesitate buying anything from there(or rather it'd be one of my first choice) as long as its priced the same as everywhere else. I'd definitely choose them before sonic or woofersetc(which i think is overpriced)

I got my headunit from Sonic. I got my SA8v2 from Woofersect. Some stuff like the Zapco products are overpriced there

this is all you'll need along with some crimp caps and some basic tool you should have at home.
