No. Even the head unit itself has a point of clipping. If you don't have a 'scope, your best bet is to set it at 75%-80% of max volume and go from there. Gain is a sensitivity. It matches your amplifier to your head unit so that you're able to use your full volume scale. Example: If your head unit goes to 50 I wouldn't go above 38. If you set your gain too high, it will reach full power before level 38 which in turn will create a clip in the sound wave if taken too far. If it's set too low, your amp will never make full power at the given volume level (38).
