Gain Adjusting

Hey everyone. I was checking my amps output today just in case the gain knob has gotten knocked around lately. I checked it and it was at 40.0 like it should be so then I started to play some songs and see what the voltage would read. On three six mafia- "Where is the bud" It only went up to 20. Is this normal? Maybe because I set my gains at 22/35?

I think it's my test tone I used and the frequency was at 40.

was the test tone 0dB?

music will not get that high, and playing short tones might not get you a good reading depending on you multimeter.

My multimeter is pretty fast and the tone was 15 seconds long. I just knew it was a 50 hz tone.

If you set the gain with a 0db test tone then yes...that's pretty normal.

You could set your gain with a different test tone...like -3db, -6db or -10db

yeah i went from -3dB tones to -10dB tones (3:1 overlap) and got a HUGE increase in output.

but i will get some clipping on certain songs when i have the HU volume up to where i set the gains at.

and you have make sure you NEVER turn the HU past that point on the HU or you'll probably be constantly clipping!
