fuse size

i thought you go by how many fuses are on the amp like if it has three 25amp ones then a 80amp fuse would be right

Always fuse for the size of the wire. 125A ANL fuse is good for 4ga.

Unless the amp has no built in fuses, than you fuse per the manufacturer's recommendations.

The wire size gives you the limit, but if the amp requires less than that it's just a little bit of extra protection to fuse it at something closer to what the amp requires.

If you're using 4 ga, for example, and the amp has 3x25A there would be no need to fuse the wire at 125A. 70-80 would work just as well and have a quicker opening time if there were ever a short.

There is nothing wrong with what n2 said above, but I would add the following. If you run 1/0 today, you will not have to run power wire again when and if you decide to upgrade later. Also, if you fuse for your amplifiers, and not the wire, you will also need to buy new fuses if you upgrade your amps.

Now none of this will be necessary if you will never upgrade your system, or if you are on a very tight budget and cannot afford to do it big. Or maybe you just like tearing your car apart multiple times just for the fun of it.

I however hate tearing my car apart. I will run oversized just so I don't have to run it all again. There is no use fusing your wire for less than it is rated for. The fuse is not there to protect your amps. It is there to protect the wire from shorting. Using a smaller fuse is OK, but pointless.

I hope that helps.
