For the last time, PLEASE: clipping does NOT blow speakers/subwoofers

for some reason I always understand squeak, good read here, amongst all the garbage that goes on here
That's because he gives the sloppiest blow jobs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
And I'll probably get banned for that one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

The differentiation comes from the fact that it's not the act of clipping that causes the damage, but the increased power that results from clipping. It's not semantics. The moral of the story is that POWER is the only way to damage a speaker, and clipping can potentially lead to an excessive amount of POWER being applied to the speaker.
Thats a good point, but telling people that clipping is not a direct cause of driver failure seem a little like leading them down the wrong path. It makes some believe that if they run a 600watt amp to a 600watt rms sub, that there is no way they can kill that woofer.

Holy shit, give it up. Believe what you want, do what you want, but just let it go already.

No, not really. You just have to reduce your laziness when you explain to them the risks involved with clipping //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif People just get lazy and instead of actually explaining what is going on they say something along the lines of "Clipping will blow your sub", and then this lazy explanation gets passed on perpetuating the myth. And then people who learned this lazy explanation use it as a point of reference and in turn fall under the illusion that it's the distortion that causes the damage. And then once a month we have to have the discussion that distortion doesn't cause damage to speakers. And we have a big long 15+ page thread about distortion, clipping and power everybody learns a little something. But the cycle just continues because people are lazy.

It isn't "clipping" that is going to cause the damage, but the excessive power that results.....and that's the way it needs to be explained //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But the whole point in this thread is to point out that there are no risks involved in running a clipped signal to a sub. Hence the title

For the last time, PLEASE: clipping does NOT blow speakers/subwoofers

I'm not trying to disagree, or shit on anyones carpet, but I do have a question...

If it's only excess power that kills speakers, then how can you blow a speaker with head unit power? We all know there aren't any head units capable of excessive power levels. I always assumed clipping was the cause. If not, what is?

squeak says it well in this quote
