first time hearing w7 and is xxx better

Im saying Ive read (by Steven Kephart, the owner of Adire) that the W7 loses efficiency in gaining its flatter BL curve. I realize this was from an owner of a competing company, but his comments about the W7 were otherwise quite complimentary.

I was wondering... If the cone area of a 13w7 is about the size of a regular 15" sub, doesnt that mean the 12w7 has more cone area than a regular 12"? And same with the 10W7 with compared to a regular 10"? So if everone compares a 13W7 to a 15" sub, isnt that kind of unfair then to compare a 12W7 to a 12" sub?
Why a 13.5-inch speaker, instead of a 15-inch?

For the big W7, our engineers determined that the 13.5 inch would produce the best sound quality. Also, keep in mind that the 13W7 has equivalent piston area to a conventional 15-inch driver and 55% more displacement potential than a 15W3, so you can think of it as a 15 that fits where other 15's don't.

are u refering to what JL has said?

Yeah not cone area....

Im sorry, but that's sales pitch BS 101. Can they explain why 13.5 inches of cone produces the best sound quality? lol Maybe they miscalculated and 13.74682 inches is actually optimal!

And notice it says a -conventional- 15-inch driver in terms of cone size comparison. And compares displacement potential to a W3, not exactly a high excursion sub. Its laced with half truths and convoluted logic.

Raw Xmag, yes, usable Xmag, no. The W7 has a Xsus that is a good 13-18mm ahead of the XXX, depending on which model W7 you're talking about.
In terms of distortion, the two are very close, but I'd say the edge actually goes to the W7, rather than the other way around.

The 10w7 outdisplaces the 10 XXX, the 12w7 outdisplaces the 12 XXX, and the 13w7 and 15 XXX have roughly the same Vd.

Overall, they are both very capable drivers. The W7 offers a tiny bit more output and performance, but costs considerably more for it.

In terms of value, I'd definitely say the XXX though.
Is there a book out there where I could learn all these words and what they mean? Let me know if you know a good book.

Well a XXX has a flatter BL Curve, so in theory it will put out less distortion. It also has (slightly) more excursion.
No model of XXX actually has more linear excursion than the equivelant model of W7. Higher Xmag, yes, Xmax, no.

The differences in distortion between the two drivers is fairly small, but honestly the W7 is likely going to have slightly LESS rather than slightly more distortion.

Every model of W7 outdisplaces the equivelant model of the XXX, save for the 13w7 vs the XXX 15, which are roughly equal.

Every W7 does have far more linear suspension travel, so they will have much lower Cms distortion than the XXX.

The Cms distortion is actually what makes the XXX hit the 10% THD mark, rather than BL distortion. The reverse is true for the W7, but the W7 has the Xmag and Xsus much further away from one another than the XXX, which means the W7 is going to have slightly less overall distortion than the XXX.
