First time fiberglassing and i have a few questions

After going to a few shops and getting quoted like 600$ for fiberglassing my speaker into the kicks i decided i would tackle the job. this is my first time fiberglassing and it was easier than i thought, but i have a few questions.

Since this was my first time fiberglassing i have a few bubbles, will this hurt the strength of the fiberglass? For today i started off with one layer of fiberglass cloth and 7 layers of resin, how many more layers or resin/cloth should i do? I also managed to mix in a few clumps, can these just be sanded down? And my final question, do most people add a layer of bondo to the fiberglass once its finished to give it a cleaner look, or do they just sand the fiberglass.

I did not use any fleece because i plan on spray painting the final product. thanks

You should post a pic to give us an idea what you have so far. it sounds like you're going at it the wrong way.

So let me get this straight. You started the form with 1 layer of matt & 7 layers of resin? Might want to add another layer of matt & maybe 2-3 layers of resin. There really is no way to tell you how many layers you will need. It all depends on how stiff it is so far & only you can tell that.

As far as the bubles, add more layer(s) over them.

Do you have mountings rings?

When your done with the mold - atach the ring to mold - aim to best listening position using Pieces of wood or dowel (

Once you have the ring mounted. Wrap fleece or a small project like this, t-shirt material will work fine. Make sure material is stretched out nice without any wrinkles. You can also use hot glue to attach material. glue to behind the corners of the molds. resin material from outside & inside of kicks. once dry, sand excess material from back of molds to keep the original mold shape.

add a few more layers of resin & matt - once kicks are strong enough - sand down any high spots or bumps. Doesn't have to be real smooth.

Now comes the bondo. One easy way to apply is mix bondo, hardener & alchohol. Mix to a consistency of.... I don't know maybe expired milk. Then with a brush, coat complete outside of kick. sand & apply again. Do this until it is complete smooth. If your going to paint it, it has to be very smooth. Hope this helps some. Not very good in explaing things.

Good luck

Bubbles will cause week spots yes . But if your just building kicks, it shouldn't be a problem. 7 layers of resin ? Did you just keep brushing resin on top of resin ? Just need to saturate the mat / cloth real well . No need to keep adding resin . Clumps can be sanded or ground ( I use a die grinder ) down. I add a layer of reinforced filler first for strength. Then use a skim coat of regular filler over the entire surface. Filler by itself is weak , and if it get's too thick . Vibrations can and will cause cracking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

thank you, you guys have been a big help. i did just keep adding layer after layer of resin. Now that i think about it i probably need to redo it.
